Greenport, Ny - 2010 Squid Season
#21
Sorry for the delay...here's my report from last night:

Me and my brother-in-law got to Greenport (Marina docks, not Railroad docks) around 11pm. We set up our light and caught our first squid within 20 minutes. Was a very slow night and we ended up with only 5 total and left around 1:30am. It was certainly good to catch a squid after getting skunked last year.

Water was very calm and there was a decent amount of baitfish swimming around in the light. Heard a few splashes around us throughout the night and saw one bluefish dart through our light (not good). At one point we saw a school of about 10 squid slowly cruise through our light but they were not interested in the jigs or baitfish at all. Must be spawning, one guy next to us said.

Not too many people out there trying. There were about 4 or 5 on the marina dock and i'd guess about 10 max on the railroad dock. From the chatter across the way we heard they were picking a few squid here or there...I think one guy said he had 10, but I can't confirm that.

Anyway...maybe this is the start? Going back tonight. If anyone is out at the marina dock, we're the two guys with the halogen light and yellow wagon. Good luck all.

Tried again Saturday night (9:30pm-1am). Caught 15 total. Pretty much the same deal as Friday night in terms of conditions and all that.

do you think it would be a good idea to go this coming weekend?

The run usually lasts 2-3 weeks, so if they were around this past weekend I would hope that this upcoming weekend should be good. Who knows though.

When you say Marina Docks, Do you mean the dock that is right across from the dock near the railroad station?

Also do they have a outlet there on the dock or do you need to bring a generator if that is allowed

Thanks, Daniel

Tried last night from 9:30-11:30pm. Caught only 1. Very tough conditions -- windy and choppy water. We had our light on but the surface was so rough that we didn't see a lot of baitfish gathering near it. Had a couple of misses and saw only 1 squid swim by. Pretty quiet out there...except for the howling wind.

[color="#0000ff"]Saw you there. We were on the railroad dock from 8:00 to 10:30 and only had 3 hits and misses. I was swinging the lantern back and forth at you before we left. A guy on the end of the dock had 2 in the bucket by the time we packed it in. I think it's over for the season. We had bluefish swiming through the light last weekend so I think that says it all. Good luck if you go back out. Keep us posted.

You let me borrow the your power. You were an angel.

Yes, I remember the night. It was too cold.

I really want to go again but it's a long drive.

If you go again, please post status again.

I really wish that squid season is not over yet...

Have a wonderful week~

It's nice to see people bringing their families squidding, although you all need warmer clothes! Glad to help you with the power. Too bad the squid fishing was terrible that night. I may try this Friday night but that might be it for me with fluke season opening on Saturday.

If anyone else tries or even hears anything, please post!! Thanks and good luck all.

I am closing off this topic as I have created a new 2011 Greenport Squid Fishing topic here:
