More floundering

went floundering last night. was the first calm night for a while!



had my best ever. i caught 5 flounder, 1 pinkie snapper, 2 garfish and a squid! there was lots of mullet about but they were very spooky.



only hassle is i sort of speared myself in the foot <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/crying.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' /> while trying to free up a fish from the barbs of the spear. i will file those barbs off the prongs before i go again. or at least make them very small.

the pinky was in about 1 foot of water and about 1 metre from shore! could not believe it!



also, i had a squid (a small squid) attack a garfish right in front of me but he missed and the garfish got away.

Hi guys,



I was reading up all this info etc and decided last night to try my hand at Chelsea (first time ever)....



Water was fairly calm, no waves...but the wind rippled the top making visablity craphouse.



Night started real slow, with only miniature flounder being spoted, and shitloads of little octopus. After an hour i finally spotted a decent sized flounder, around 30cm about 2 metres from the shore, i speared him, but somehow while walking back to shore he wriggled off. Which pissed me off heaps, that being my first flounder and all.



Anyways the night dragged on and eventually speared me another one and a flathead too, so a pretty successful night I guess.



I have a question though, what weather signs, patterns do you guys look for before you head out? or do you just head out randomly, do you check the wind, tides, moon phase etc?? is it important??



And, anyone know where i can try and pick up some tasty sand crabs for dinner this time of year? Cheers guys.

we had a sand crab discussion earlier. you can't take them wading in port phillip bay.



bad luck about losing the flounder. i had the opposite problem where i could never get the fish off my spear because of the damn barbs! i have filed them off now.



i just go floundering when it is calm. i don't pay much attention to the tides. though i guess it might be important. the problem is it is barely ever calm on the east side of the bay because of the prevailing south westerly winds. so you are lucky if you get a calm night once a fortnight.

lol, its all good, i didnt do too well. actually i didnt do anything, i got there, setup, hook my light onto the battery, was werking for like 3 minutes, then the bulb blew up.

tell me, is your floundering light the type that looks like a car headlight? Mine is like that and i have often wondered what i would do if the filament burnt out cause i dont see no globe in there!

yeah, looks like a car light....well the filaments blown and i have no idea what to do with it. i pulled it appart and well, if you could find the same fitting light and had a shitload of silicon you could repair it pretty easily.



any of the pros care to comment or point me to where i could pick up a globe??

My floundering light looks basically like a car headlight on a stick, if you could find a cheap or second hand headlight maybe you could attach it with loads of silicone and cross your fingers!



Also, something I was thinking about fatboi, are you sure that your light is supposed to run off 12 volts? My mate has a 6V light that blew when he connected it to a 12V car battery, so that would be the first thing that I'd check. Also, is your car battery 12V or 16V?

couple of question. do i just attach the headlight to a pole and then wire it to a car battery?



also how did u waterproof it?

Hey pat,

I've never made up a floundering light from a headlight, I was just thinking aloud, but I don't reckon it would be too hard, you would just need to make the part where the pole joins the headlight strong AND waterproof to protect the wiring (silicon would be good for waterproofing, but strength would be the problem). Epoxy resin perhaps (but I think the point of making a light from a cheap headlight is to keep things cheap, once you start buying epoxy, silicon etc it gets a bit pricey)

my lights 12V and so is me battery....so its all a mystery why it blew. I have no idea who manufacturered it coz I bought it when i was down in Lakes Entrance for prawning and threw away the packaging. So unless i head down there again I think i'm stuffed.



I pulled the thing apart, its just a car light with shitloads of silicon to waterproof the wiring....might try and custom make me one, using xenon lights and stuff, hehehehe liike those ones that blind you as you see em coming, that would be sweet!!!!
