Usually only use one, mate!!!

But half a metre will do, have seen 2 used before, but i dont think it matters as i have seen 2 squid fight over one jag!!
SA - the land of the bigger fish. The fish on the east, measure the least, but if you head west, you'll be bringing in the best!!

I squid fish at Newport RI USA and I have seen people using 5 jigs and catching as many as 4 squid in one cast.

I usually use 2 or 3 jig and place them about 2 feet apart. I usually start my day using all 3 colors: 1 pink, 1 blue and 1 green. Squid seem to prefer centain color and using all 3 colors offer them the "full menu". ;-) Yes, I do get 2 or even 3 from time to time but I had also lost 3 jigs in one cast. :-(

but i guess you must have a long rod in order to cast far away off shore with more then one jig no?

I often fish with 2 jigs on one line. Just whip the hooks off and put 2 jigs on..... sinker on the bottom.

The other day i just used 1 jig, as the squid were so thick... but once i got home i thought of making a leader with 5 or 6 tags off it for jigs.

Of course, you would have to check the fishing guidelines to see whether such a method is allowed in your area.

The patches of Squid we saw going under us on the sounder were 10 to 20Meter round balls of them, so there is no reason multiple jigs wouldn't work, just a hell of a weight to pull in.
