Puget Sound, Wa (2009 Season)

Went to Seacrest on Saturday and caught 4 in a little over an hour. There was about 6 other people there, and I only saw 5 or 6 being pulled up between them. So far Seacrest has been much better than Edmonds though.

I think the Redondo Pier has been about the most productive lately on the West side of the Sound. People have been consistantly catching a fair # of squid, they ARE SMALL though. You must be sure to use the smallest jigs you can find for these squid, due to the size.

ok i'm very new to squid fishin. been maybe ten times in the last three weeks for a grand total of 3 squid. 2 caught within minutes of each other. mainly at the edmonds pier. did go down to pier 86 on a word of mouth recomendation. other then the plug ins for lights and the lack of seals everything else sucked. i did catch one small one on the bottom with my 4 friends. it closes 11. back at edmonds there was one hot night but it just so happened that the christmas boats singing coinsided with the squid and lights had to be off. just a the generators had to be turned off the water went purple with squid. after the singing i didn't see anything.



I have a few basic questions about squidding... coming from a salmon/steelhead/sturgeon backround i was curious if squid could smell.. if so is there a scent i could buy. also presentation is of some importance? noticing all the various colors of jigs on the dock and askin around it seems to be a personal preferance thing. reading the articles and previous posts i have realized that perhaps my jigs(standard size) might be too big. i want to catch more, dont really care about size. there has to be some kind of science to this... speed of jigging and water depth?



also when fishin at edmonds i have noticed that a select few fisherman are catchin squid while i'm not. are they cachin my squid? like their bait better? would it be better to move down and away from them?



going again to edmonds friday night for some cold bonding.

ask the guys that are geting squid were there buying there jigs at.jigs are the most importent thing.and some times size counts to.lots of pople get there jigs from the guy saleing on the dock.he has the best squid jigs around.his are the only ones i use. good luck squiding

I completely agree, size and quality both matter. But Red, you're the one selling your jigs on the dock. So I think that's great that you use your own jigs.

went down to pier86 on friday. it was hot for about an hour. smaller jigs did the trick.

hi wannabe i thiking this small jig might work.what do you think? and can you drive into pier 86 now.? i will come down if you dont have to walk a mile .

it is a pretty good walk.. not much further than edmonds though i don't think... parking is tight down there... anything smaller seemed to be working... while it was hot everything was working. "tiny teasers" was the model of the jigs. oh if you do go down there don't pack the generator as there is plug ins and usually plenty of light already. friday they blew the breaker with too many lights.

I've heard the tiny squid jigs have been popular down in Seattle, especially with the extra small squid. Hot colors from what I have heard (Green, Pink, and Orange). I think I like the orange the best, as it's a bright color, and similar in color to the local shrimp.



I've heard that Pier 69 has also been good. I've had several reports from Des Moines pier, that they have been regularly doing well, with also the occasional school of large squid going through.



I'm probably going to give Des Moines a try tomorrow evening if I can find the time. Hopefully I hit some, as I would love to get some for dinner tomorrow.

yeah. just go back from 86. they hit about an hour before tide caught about a dozen. orange and glow seemed to work best also the green with red worked too. it was windy but this turned out good cause after a while me and my buddy had the pier to ourselves.

Been fishing around piers 62 and 69 with good results.... Fishing has been consistant but most or all of the squid being in the 4-6 in range with the one in twenty being the nice big ones we are all used to. Average night seems to be around 20 or so per person with a little time. 2 to 4 hours per trip. Pier 86 seems to be hit or miss from what I have been getting. Anyone with any reports of good sized squid moving in anywhere? Small ones are good but alot of work to clean. Oh yeah and I need some good small jigs someone want to sell some?

I tried at the dock at Coupville. Tide was low. Snaged lots of hering but no squid. Only about 7 feet of water

i was at the bait shop on camano talking with people about where would be a good place locally and coupville was all could think of but the drive for me would be the same as edmonds or 86. have you tried cornet bay? i would think that would be a hot spot. coupville is faster reached by boat from camano. it took me an hour and half to get there for jury duty a while back and i can get across the bay in twenty minutes.





as for the size of the squid at 86 they are fairly small but a couple in the 8"+ range but mostly five to six inches.
