Keppel Island, QLD
#1
Hi all, New memeber here!

Yesterday I went fishing around Great Keppel Island and hooked a small squid that was definatly a calamari Sp. of squid. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> I moved up from Geelong (Vic) to Yeppoon about 6 months ago and used to fish for calamari in "The rip" in Port Phillip bay and loved a good feed of salt & pepper squid! In 6 months I have not come across these squid before. What species of squid is it and are they around in numbers at certain times of year around here. Are the same tactics I used in Vic ok up here ETC? God I hope so! Any info would be great!!

set yourself up a floating light to drop into the water and work them at night and drop one over the side as a live bait and be ready because fingermark love them.

I use to get quite few out on the reefs back in my reef fishing days and they cook up pretty good.

as to what breed of squid they are I'm not sure but you could look it up in the grants guide to fishes book.

OK I stayed over night at Keppel with a light on and there are 2 species of squid there! 1 is a small calamari sp, and the other is a long hooded species similar to an arrow squid!

I caught the arrow type species and had trouble with the small calamari sp. (I wish i brought cast net!- Next time)

All good 6 squid tubes sitting in milk ready for crumbing!

Thanks all

We have had some great trips and use the hoods for calamari and the wings and heads for reef bait

Since I have posted this topic I have been getting squid regularly out at places like Pumpkin Is, Keppel and Barren. You look like you enjoy catching them by the looks of the bins full of squid.

I will keep an eye out for a boat in the harbour that has squid & jim beam on board (nearly every pic has some in it..lol).Good taste there too! Have a chat and compare notes about squid and reefies.
