Puget Sound, Wa (2010 Season)

12/11 Went to Kingston with the neighbor. Tragically slow start in this monsoon. Just as we were getting ready to leave things switched on. Both of us limited in an hour and a half.(2300-0030) It is now 0450 on the 12th after cleaning our catches...time to go to bed.

Hit Kingston tonight for about an hour. 6-7pm. It was choppy and raining when i first arrived and calmed down a little over the hour. the squid hit consistently all hour on anything i could throw at them.

i managed about three dozen. All in all, a pretty good night. It was the first night that i was able to catch a decent amount of squid in poor weather, which in my mind suggests a turn for the better in an

already good season.

I will let you guys know that pier 69 Nd 86 has been great! been getting about 4 to 6 pounds a night. however I want more than a bunch of small squid. can someone help me out with getting to the pier off of Kingston? I would love to try tonight if someone wants to meet me down there. for exchange I will guide a trip here in seattle. that way both of us get to learn something new!

Im not sure what my night will end up looking like, but i will more than likely put in a couple of hours tonight at Kingston.

Kingston has been consistently producing medium to large squid the last few times Ive been there.

one thing you should remember is if the tide is lower don't expect to find many squid under the lights. i was there last night till 7 and this was the case.

As you are walking down the pier the far left corner is the deepest part and will consistently hold squid even at the lowest of tides.

the only downside is off that corner you are fishing in the dark, if you have lights of any kind to bring i would recommend that.

the dock however has no power source for lights so you would need battery powered lights or generator.

that being said, i do just fine without any light source of my own. the high tide tonight is near midnight i believe.

the other issue that might be worth consideration is the ferry schedule.

if you are coming from the Seattle side and planing on taking the ferry, they don't run all night.

the latest boat leaving Kingston according to the schedule i have is an 11pm, and the earliest is 4:55am.

So depending on what time of night you wanted to fish you could end up stranded for a bit.

The fishing pier is to the south, adjacent to the passenger loading ramp. I'm not likely to be there tonight, however everything tfish has been saying has been my experience as well. If your driving over take the first left you can and go 2 blocks. That will put you into the parking area. Load your gear up and carry it back towards the ferry boats and head down to the end of the pier. If your walking on, park in Edmonds, walk on, enjoy the ride, then walk off and at the bottom of the ramp make a 180' left and enjoy the fishing. Hopefully you can turn around and walk back with a bucket full of squiddies.

Kingston was decent tonight. about a half limit in an hour and a half. i called it a night after something started splashing around in the water and the squid took off. sort of looked like it was a salmon jumping around.

it wouldn't be the first time Ive seen a winter blackmouth with a belly full of squid. too bad i squid with ultra-light gear.

Not a single squid from Kingston last night. i don't really know what to make of it. seems the nast few nights the squid have been coming out early and as soon as low tide slack hits the squid disappear (last few nights around 7-8pm). i fished from 8-10 because i could make it earlier and came up empty handed. so i went home and got some hot tea and food.

i figured they would come back later on once the tide raised so i fished from 11pm-1am on an incoming tide and didn't get so much as a bump. i couldn't have asked for better conditions weather wise. it was overcast so super dark, very little if any wind, and the water clarity was already starting to improve since last weeks rains.



-So i don't have any pictures of the catch obviously, and unfortunately my attempts at taking pictures of the dock didn't really turn out in the dark.

I made it out last night as well. Nice weather, bit chilly!!!! Went to Les Davis in Tacoma, was very slow. I think I ended up with about 20pcs in 2 1/2hrs, all small. Saw a few bigger ones come in. I think my best jig last night was a White Spiral Teaser, they seemed to hit it pretty agressively when they were around. Just about everything hit near the bottom.



Might try Port Orchard or Seattle this evening.

Your info is great!!! Thanks for your help. I just realized we have been fishing in the other side of Kingston, the Edmonds pier, and the result is completely different. I've been there numerous time expecting some good night but always come back disappointed. We got generators and lights but they are no help most of the time we end up with a couple for 3-4 hours. Really wish we can head to the other side and see if the catch is that good. My assumption, the difference between Kingston and Edmonds is due to location. Along the East side of Puget Sound, there are numerous rivers, and especially during winter, we have extra high flows of dirty water. This likely makes less than ideal conditions for the squid "dirty water, lower salinity due to fresh water influx". JUST MY OPINION

I think your assumption is valid. Everytimewhen we have heavy rain and murky flood water in the Elliott bay, all the squid dissapear. I don't blame them when I see the brown dirty water flowing from the rivers. The low tide didn't help much either. I'm sure they will be back when the high tide pushes in some clear saltwater from the sound next week.
