got 75 oops forgot to put that... largest were 18" average was 12" and a few at 6-"8" females were full of eggs

How about we try to put the females with eggs back into the water? I mean it seems like the right thing to do, if you want more squid in the future. I know some people going to say "F*** that, I drove a long way and wasted a tank of gas. I'm taking whatever I can get".

Can you tell without slicing the mantle open? Anyone have any luck at GI last night despite the rain?

Definitely a good idea, but squid are pretty fragile creatures... I think just the act of removing them from the water then taking out the jig might be enough shock to kill them. And does anyone know what the maximum age of longfin squid is? How many years does the same individual squid come back to spawn? While looking that up I found an interesting website... Hey guys and gals,
Hope everyone has a great weekend ahead. I have a quick question to ask, and really need some help with it before tomorrow morning ( early). Just found out, we won't be going to Stonington this weekend, but instead, we are headed to Cape Cod. We plan on mostly fishing, but we would love to try our luck for some squid also. We will be staying in the South Yarmouth area. Any and all info on squidding areas in or near South Yarmouth would be very helpfull to us. Thanks in advance for your help, Ned and Margie & David

Its thought the females spawn once, but lay several egg clusters, though as far as I've read this is still undocumented for wild D. pealei

if you can 1, definitively tell the difference between male and female and 2, when you do determine a female, detect that is is full of eggs or not.... then i would be all for self regulation and throwing them back... but other wise it's a crap shoot.... i don't thing the squid are too fragile. i think you could handle them and return them to the water without big time damage.
16-05-2009, 02:39 AM
on the other hand, lets say you release all females regardless, and only take males, there will be way less males to mate with the females....
16-05-2009, 02:52 AM
Aren't the female squid bigger than male squid?
16-05-2009, 02:52 AM
i'm confident the species is healthy that's probably why there hasn't been any regulations in place... i'm just more worried that less schools and size density are making their way to our area... maybe they're heading elsewhere (who knows)... there's probably a spot elsewhere that's hot right now, but no one is letting the secret out =)

I just finished my bottom and hope to be there this weekend as well. Sorry, I don't knoow where the ramp is yet. The reports of a day time boat bite have been very good.

this question solidifies my statement... to the average squidder who knows if an above average in size male isn't a female... the average lifespan of a squid is what? a year? two? i feel the squid species is just fine, otherwise i feel we would have some concern about it...(see american eel fellow striper fisherman)
