1940 Vintage Squid Jigs - Real Or Fake?

I came across this squid jig on ebay today:

The seller claims this is an Australian-made squid jig and its dated back to 1940s, made of wood and cloth with a broken lead. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' />

Somehow i have my doubt in this - it looks pretty much like the average jigs on the market today, especially the hooks and pattern. I've seen some vintage fishing lures and they usually look really shabby. 70 years is a long time, and i doubt this is what a squid jig look like 70 years ago, if they were even invented back then! The hook looks like these mass-produced squid hooks. Fishing industry is small in Australia and there aint many tackle manufacturers - why would they mass-produce these special squid hooks? Does anyone know who invented squid jigs/squid hooks, and where was it first mass produced (i would have picked the japanese <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':unsure:' /> )

To me, it looks like the seller is trying to sell a cheap broken squid jig for a few bucks <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/zorro.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':zorro:' />

i agree it looks like an old crappy jig that has no value at all. i doubt it is from the 40s also. i wonder whether the guy is just trying to be funny. It could be worth writing to him and asking him some specifics. A: Becaude it came from a deceased estate which contained lures that were used just after ww two. Also modern day squid jigs are not made from from the materialss used in this jig and they DO NOT look like this jig when you handle them. I was born in 1945 and my grandfather had lures just like this since stolen and lastly I know my history of Aussie fishing lures AND WOULD NOT CLAIM THEY WERE 1940S, 1950S LURES IF THEY WERE MODERN!!!!See my feedback



Any old salts out there, was the squid jigs looking like this back in the 1940s? And anyone know the history of squid jigs?

this jig has all the modern day jig features, the prawn imitation, lead weight, strong pink tiger pattern, specialized squid hooks and even a protruding point as the eyes! again, was the squid jigs back in the 1940s as defined as this?

For starters Rebel didn't start making this type of lure until the late 1960s. Although I doubt it is that old. It is likely a sun-bleached lure he's pulled off a snag somewhere.

This looks like a knockoff of the Yamashita egi sutte, the smallest yamashita squid jig I've seen & own. And if it catches anything like the real deal, lookout, it is a slayer, especially on finicky/smaller squid. And if the price stays that low, I say go for it. You'll never know.

Sorry..that is not from 40's.



The old jigs were plastic but even then that was only in the 60's and 70's.



There was no squid fishery for anglers in those days.

He clearly isn't a fisherman or he wouldn't have made such a stupid statement "they don't make them like that anymore" I don't think he lives near a kmart or target or has been in a tackle shop.



Does anyone know what he got for it? I tried to look and the bidding had closed. I have about 20 "vintage" and "1940s" jigs i have found whilst diving <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Some had algae growing on them so they may have been older <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> hahahahaha.
