First Squid!
#1
I've tried jigging a few more times since my first post and I've still had no luck.

Fortunately a friend of mine has a private jetty in Brisbane Waters (NSW Central Coast) with a great set up for squidding. He has an outdoor spotlight attached to mains power which he projects into the water at night.

After a few hours of normal fishing one of the girls hooked a squid which we managed to retrieve. As we're netting it we realised that he/she/it wasn't travelling alone and a much large squid was next to it. I grabbed my jigging rod whilst the others kept an eye on it. It appeared on the other side of the jetty, closest to shore, and almost as soon as I dropped the jig it lunged for it. We grabbed the nets but it broke free. Sure enough, as soon as I dropped the jig in it went for it again. This time I let it hook itself and it actually took drag several times as it tried to head for the weed bed. We managed to net it nicely and calamari was had 1hr later.

The jig was a pink Yo-Zuri Auri-Q but to but I wouldn't read too much into that.

Yes they do. Did one have horizontal stripes and the other spots? If so, they are male and female.
