Hi Guys,
Its getting towards that time of year that the long thin squid make their annual visit for their Spring break to Brighton in East Sussex. They turn up anytime between the end of March and the beginning of MAy, and are around until the end of May most years. The competition dates will be called at short notice, with an eye to the squid arriving and the weather, to ensure the best results for the entrants. This year we might have Sky TV coming to play as well. At this years events there will be a brief explanation of the most succesful methods to date, to ensure an even opportunity for even newcomers to squidding to do well. Last year we had just two blanks, and one was me...... <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' />
IF you are in the UK around this time, please do consider coming down to see us. I will put the exact dates on here as I know them. The event will be sponsored by TRONIX, a rapidly growing tackle wholesaler/distributor, who do import some tidy squid jigs. If they do the same as last year, there will be a free jig on entry. There will be an entrance fee, with 100%, minus the day ticket costs, going to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. In the UK, the coastal rescue is perfomed by the RLNI, a purely charity funded organisation, made up of volunteers. Us sea users in the UK will all have need of their services if we didnt use them already (I did, twice!!) so I feel it is an appropriate organisation to receive the proceeds.
Prizes will be secured from local businesses, and will be mostly tackle orientated.

This is George with American Maple, we are a fishing tackle manufacture base out Los Angeles area. I found you on the website about the squid competition. I was searching for squiding in England because recently we got some inquiries coming for UK consumer on our website about our squid jigs. We are not yet distributing in UK yet but would like find a good representative or distributor in UK who knows the market. Dropped the first squid of the year at the Brighton Marina today, which means that the 2nd All England Squid competition is about to be announced. With some nice settled weather making itself known, I feel it will be before the end of April. As soon as squid numbers have been built up, and weather conditions are looking good, I will anounce a date!!

Ok, its here....... Currently scheduled for the 26th April at Brighton marina. Final destination regarding the wall to be fished to be decided at five day forecast time. Lots of fun, £5 in plus marina ticket (£3). All £5's will be taken to the RNLI shop in the marina, and the receipt will be published. Genereous sponsorship by TRONIX and "The Tackle Box" at Brighton Marina means goody bags will be available to winners, plus some cracking trophies.. Only one rod this time for squid, and no other species rod, as attending numbers are anticipated to be much higher, which means all the space will be needed for the squid rods, and static lines cause havoc with float runs etc. Two jigs max. A real fun event, it will be postponed in the event of coloured water. Carp rod and sliding float tackle, or a two ounce bomb if you want to bounce jigs about. All cephalods count, and last year cuttles did feature amongst the squid. Brighton is about a fifty minute to an hour drive from Portsmouth, east along the A27, and an hour from South London, or 47 minutes from London Victoria by train.

I've never caught squid before, I'm a marina regular and I really want to join the competition. I bought a plain, straight green squid jig with a glow-in-dark bit inside, it's a slow-sinking one do you think it will be useful or should I buy another one?

I got a question concerning the competition - do you have to keep all the squid and if so do you need a drop net?

Hi Pete,
The jig you have should be fine, but I think TRONIX will have jigs availalbe on the morning. Have a look at my diary ( www.fishyrob.co.uk) for the 10th May 2008 and I think you will find the winner had six squid (theres a joke there somewhere) on a small TRONIX green jig.
We do keep all squid, as from what I have seen they are very fragile and wouldnt handle a return. As for the drop net, to be honest as a marina regular I would advise you should always carry one, but if you dont have one on the day dont worry as plenty of people will. I must admit I dont think I will be fishing so much as landing on the day. IT is all about fun and raising some cash for the RNLI, more than serious fishing, but last year only two people blanked out of about 15, and one was me..... <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' />

Thank you for your advice, I have already been on your website many times. I'm sure I'll buy couple of jigs before the competition as I'm going on the East Arm next week. I was going to buy a drop net anyway for this year's mackerel head bass fishing on the West Arm <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' />

A joke you said,could it be.....

Very good.....!! It did make me chuckle.....
Cephalods turned up in good numbers at the marina today. Squid and cuttles putting in an appearance. Can anyone tell me in their experience (globally) if the squid are more often liking slack water of neaps or stronger currents of springs?

All cephalods captured today were on small Tronix jigs, UNBAITED!

Popped into the Tackle Box yesterday and they told me that numbers are restricted to 50 people but they couldn't sell me any tickets. Will tickets be available in advance? If so when and from where?
When does everything start? I want to book at least 3 tickets and it could be a lot more as a lot of friends are interested in coming.

Hi Patrick,
I think there might have been a miscomunication somewhere, as there are no upper limits. Currently we are EXPECTING about 50 people, so that might be the confusion. Currently, the meeting place will be outside the tackle box, and the competition is likely to be across both arms on a "rover" type basis, possibly with the weigh in (count and meaure in fact) being at an allocated time (say 15:30) back at the tackle box. You, your friends, your family, and even your dog are very welcome!!
Been out there again today. I only managed one squid, but I saw three others and a cuttlefish caught. Some monster mackerel (more like small bonito) arond as well.

Hi all,
I can confirm that the competition is postponed until the 3rd May (Sunday)
Got my prime prawn bass baits mullered by cuttlefish tonight. Also saw two squid taken by a jig on a six foot trace, with a two ounce lead, running ledge style, bounced back along the bottom. Will be trying that out tomorrow!!

Brand new to this, but after reading through your site i thought i would give squidding a go and what a great decision it was. I went out on a rented kayak from Torbay kayak hire and fished the end of Paignton pier dragging a squid rig and my first was on within 5 minutes, fished for 2 hours and landed 12 squid all about a foot long, the kayak was black when i handed it back and it's one of the best nights fishing I have ever had.
Just thought i'd say what a great site <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' /> and thanks for the new hobbie.
Does any body know when the squid leave The Torbay area.?

Fantastic Andrew. Nice to hear they are inshore down your way. If they follow the same pattern as the squid here (Brighton), they will drop offshore and disperse after breeding. Last year they dissapeared pretty much on a single tide, in the first week of June. They come in to Weymouth in the autumn, and possibly to Brighton as well, but I am distracted by the fantastic cod and bass fishing we get by then!!
I can confirm the squid comp is a go for 3rd May. Forecast is looking ratehr good. Still havent decided the final times though. Apologies....!!
