I caught my first squid last night. I purchased a cheapo $5 jig and headed down to Bobbin Head Wharf (here in sydney). On the 3rd "cast" I caught one! Used it as bait for jew and had some massive runs. So I tried to catch another. By now it was dark and there was very little light, still I could just see squid chasing the jig. One grabbed on, but the barbs failed to set. After that, there was no more interest. Oh well, next time, and there will be one! (tonight if i have the time!!)
Just a question... How do you "kill" a squid humainly before you pull the mantel out and head off?
Cheers,
Stewart
A strike to the part between the head and the main body will also kill the squid very quickly, although i always just leave them on the jetty until they turn white!

We used to catch heaps of squid down at Bobbin Head and Apple tree bay when we were kids. Lots of fun and good eating. Only ever little squid however.
hi, after i visited squidfish's "Recommended Fishing Destinations" yesterday n headed to bobbin head last night, ready to catch some squid, but when i got there, a sign outside the entrance saids: "No entry sunset to sunrise, penalty applies".
wonder how ppl can get in there? and any one can tell me how's the fishing there? thx

No fishing at night?? Thats ridiculous <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' /> , but stew said he was there and it was dark, so..........
SA - the land of the bigger fish. The fish on the east, measure the least, but if you head west, you'll be bringing in the best!!
i wondered about that sign before too... but of the many times i been squiding there no one has said anything. just park your car and get fishing!

Hi Fishos,
Do you fish for squid using lights from a boat?
Setting up a light off the boat into the water should attract small bait fish which should in turn attract squid.
Does anybody do this with any success.
Cheers

Pulled one out a couple days ago at Apple Tree Bay after an hour of stuffing around or so. First time ever squidding so i was probably doing something wrong. Last night went there with a couple mates for a few hours and we didn't pull out a single one. Another fella that popped down got a decent squid. Haven't tried Bobbin Head side yet.

been down to ATB a few times more over the past week, and although i can see them floating around, they just dont want to play. A few more fellas that have apparently been squidding ATB/Bobbin Head for years are saying that there really are sweet stuff all around anymore. Water quality is severely poor compared to what it once was.

I went over to the Wharf at Bobbin Head, and i honestly cant see where it would be suitable to pull in squid? No weed beds or structure from what i can see.

Been squidding down at apple tree bay since my last post pretty frequently, and can tell you there are definately squid there! Not big and very inconsistent nights, but when its on, its on. Can consistently pull in atleast one squid every night there, but have managed days where I'm pulling in 6 or 9 in pretty short times. Turns out my squidding technique was just shit.

Yeah, will admit, im having more luck wherever i go with a really really slow reel-in then some quick jabs on the rod. Very very limited luck using the "proper" jap technique. Maybe im just not feeling them?
