Puget Sound, Wa (2008 Season)

Terminal 86 fishing pier on Elliott Bay

Nov 14 8pm-11pm

thanks Glen, and hello to everyone.

12+ came down to try their luck on the pier tonight.

the word on the pier was that due to the last few weeks of constant rain,

the rivers that flow into the sound made the water too murky.

im new to squiding so if this is true.

i am going to wait till the waters clear up and just try my luck with pier perching on lake washington.

a few small squids were caught.

Hi, I'm new to the forum.

I go squid jigging pretty much everywhere on the East side of Puget Sound mainly to Pier86 and Edmonds.

I went to Pier86 on 11/18 and caught 5 small ones, 11/19 @ Redondo and got nothing, 11/20 Shishole and got nothing. I guess the squids are not here yet <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

I will try to report as much as I can, and I also would like to hear it from others too.

A couple of buddies and myself are going to try our luck at Edmonds tomorrow night. We haven't been in a couple of years, and thought it's time to get out there again.

Does anyone know of a good pier north of Edmonds that's open at nights? Has anyone ever tried Mukilteo, or Everett or have any suggestions?

We are going to try a new lure, the ones with the blinking LED's. I might also try something new using live bait on a blank squid hook.

I'll let you know if we have any luck!

Any tips on the color combinations this year?

Oh by the way, I've been reading and watching the events unfold as the Humbolt squid are now showing up in Washington, Oregon and BC waters. I'd love to haul in a 7 foot monster! I guess global warming is making our waters livable for the giant squids, all within the past 4 years or so.

hi UofWDawgs! welcome to the forum,

did you manage to catch any squid?

Hey Glen,

Went out to Edmonds from about 5:00 to 10:30. It was dead! People began showing up around 8:30, we had a generator and lights and threw out all kinds of squid jigs but nothing. No one else was catching either. We didn't see any at the surface.

My friend did catch a decent size copper rockfish off a squid jig, but we threw it back. I don't think they are in season.

Tried some live bait as well, just nibbles from some minnows.

Maybe it's too early, we are going to wait for a couple of weeks and try again... I was hoping for some stufffed squid for turkey day but oh well

I went to Seacrest Pier last night with 3 other people for just over 2 hours and only caught 2 small squid between the 4 of us. We were the only ones on the pier (but that's no surprise given that it was Thanksgiving.) We tried many different depths and jigs to no avail. We saw a couple squid around the surface but not much other than that. I did catch 2 octopus with a small green jig though!!

I'm thinking about trying Edmonds sometime this weekend and will post the result if I end up going.

Good squidding to all!!!!!

Went to Edmonds over the weekend to test it out. Was my first time there, and could only stay an hour. Didn't have any luck and was one of only two people squidding...and we were together. A few people showed up when we were leaving.

I usually squid a little every year and it has never been this bad. Does the run usually come further into the winter? Is anyone having any luck anywhere?

All the word on the dock was that Edmonds has been quiet so far this year. I'm learning that squid fishing is like steelhead fishing... Mostly freezing ass temperatures for hours and hours without a bite followed by brief moments of excitement. Seems there a lot of "experts" out there saying this and that about the squid "runs" but in my opinion they are just unpredictable and it could be on like donkey kong one week and dead the next.

I'm gonna wait a week or 2 and try Edmonds pier again.

Hi,

I'm new to this site (just found it), but I've been squidding for the last 2 or 3 years. I just wanted to add that I went down to Des Moines pier last Friday night (28 Nov), and it was absolutely dead. That was my first night out this season, so I was a little surprised.

There were roughly twenty people squidding, and nothing was caught while I was there (1600 - 2230). I saw no squid in the water, nor any herring, for that matter. Also, no seabirds (cormorants, to name one), nor any plaguey seals.

I was told that it had been quite dead for the last two weeks at Des Moines, and it certainly was that night. I was pitching out a pink and a green set of jigs (thank you Jon for the squid jig components), both colors being proven squid takers in my book, but there were no squid to hit them!

Well, there's always next weekend, and maybe I'll get my squid light battery charged by then.

Tight lines and reel fast,

larry

Hi

New to squidding and the forum. My buddy and I are going to try next weekend. Any reports of squid in Tacoma yet? Les Davis Pier? I need to get some jigs--any recommendations are appreciated.

Hi Everyone,

Went to Seacrest in West Seattle last night for just under two hours with three other people and caught 4 squid. There were smelt the entire time but not much squid action. We saw a few on the surface and it seemed like the ones we caught were a fair ways off the bottom. I heard from someone else though that the daytime had been good yesterday.

Hey new to the post here but wanted to start getting a little more involved this year. Just sounds like everyone is having trouble having luck and would love to share what I have done this year. Although not much at all yet. Went down to Edmonds about three weeks ago and my wife and I were the only two on the dock. After about 30 mins freezing with no big lights I felt pretty stupid so we left. Is there ANYTHING going on ANYWHERE this year? Just suck ever since I have brought my wife into this sport it has sucked even though she's a trooper and never complains, I just feel bad dragging here out on her friday and saturday nights telling her of these stories of two to three of us going out catching over 100, and not catching almost anything with her at all. She's due just dont want to test her patience with something that can be so fun. Well Let me know if anyone out there is hookin' up!

It's been REALlllly realllly reallllllllly slooooooow!!!!! I've heard of almost nothing on the east side of Puget Sound. The only reports of catches I've heard are in the Port Orchard "Waterman Pier", and the Bremerton Passenger Ferry Docks. I haven't actually had any reports on the Port Orchard/Bremerton side in a few weeks though, but generally always better over there for some reason. I'm STILL hoping we will get a run over here. I'm not going myself till I hear at least some decent reports, but I may just head over to Bremerton later this month.

I have gone to Redondo fishing dock, Des Moines pier and Seacrest having no luck. I has been one of the slowest squiding season since I have started squidding in the Puget Sound.

I don't even see the regulars at the Redondo pier anymore it's that bad. But hopefully this colder temperature will bring them in crossing my fingers.
Happy Squidding!!!
