Hi Glen and everyone else at Squid world,
I dont have a colour that works well or better than any other but jigs with two strong contrasting colours do seem to be more succesful than mono coloured jigs. Another thing I noticed while on the squid survey was that a combination of jigs that was succesful again and again would suddenly "switch off" for no obvious reason. This has led me to believe that weather conditions, sea state, light/time of day and probably even atmospheric pressure all combine to define which colour or contrast of colours works best.
I have given up on trying to deduce which is best and for what reason and put all my faith in serendipity. Que sera sera!!!

In Japan, white seems to be the preferd colour for octopus. Was trying for aori on Wednesday morning and caught one with a marble based white jig. Pretty tiny so I let it go though <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='  ' />

BTW we call them jigs here in vic....i noticed SA called then jags.

I've always thought jig's were artificial prawns,..
and jag's were spikes to put bait on. Same in Vic and SA.

just thought i might add my 2 cents worth
i use white yammy most of the time with great success. After that its the green yammy, then the orange.
all yamashita all size 2.0
I have currently been experimenting with other brands and colours. I found the daiwa 1.8 jigs to be effective (orange).
I have also tried the yellow/red $5 jig and had fantastic results.
The problem is the jigs are so expensive and the good ones are sold really quick, you never get a chance to use them. And also when i try new spots, im careful not to use the expensive jigs so they don't get snagged. Ill just keep trying, ill let you know the results.

Recently, I mean in November, in HK, when the water is clear, it appears to me that there are no noticeable differences in the following colours:- namely orange, red, green, blue. However, when the water is turbid, orange and green work better. Red still works, but blue does not work.

In my squidding efforts arround Sydney and Brisbane waters I found that when using the small 1.5 - 1.8 size jigs, jig colour makes little difference. Although when using larger 3.0 - 3.5 I generally have success with the green Yo Zuri jig. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/fishing.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' />

Again, on November 30, 2008, here in Po Tai Island of Hong Kong, squids attack every squid jigs(of red, orange, green, grey) I used. Those squid jigs worked well until they fell into the bottom of the sea and never rose up again. It appears to me that there were no noticeable differences among the kind of colour I used on jigs.

Discarding the frequency of attack by squids, I am always rewarded the largest squid caught during the fishing trip, WHEN I USE A PINK SQUID JIG (of 4.0 size). Believe me or not, 4.0 pink squid jig is always my last resort to catch a large squid.
Experience teaches me:-
To catch a big squid- use pink squid jig.
To catch a squid as fast as possible- use orange, or green squid jigs.

I think the store shelves are stocked heavily with bright coloured jigs, hence more brighter jigs are used.
My theory is a green jig is almost the same colour as a raw prawn, the prawns we see at the supermarket are cooked and are PINK.
Maybe the fussy upper-class squid like the cooked(pink) jigs.
I might try cast out a seaseme/satay/garlic bbq'd prawn....see what happens <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />
My vote is for green.

well crew after reading all these theories and practical outcomes of jigs used to catch squid here is what it all comes down to..
IF IT WORKS...USE IT.
it's a bit like looking the night sky at the stars and thinking...which one...LOL
here in brisbane I have my jigs that work for me ... so you have yours that work for you.
