Mornington report - VIC
Hi all

we fished tonight from Mornington in a small boat in 3 metres.

2 hours for 5 squid....all small to medium size.

Perfect conditions. Dark gold jigs the best option.

Plenty of baitfish out in Port Phillip at the moment and where there is bait there are Salmon. Good sized fish to 2kg can be seen from the pier busting up schools of bait and when hooked, they go like the clappers. Best lures have been metal slugs either cast out or trolled and small 3inch soft plastic stick baits twitched back. Around the shallower reefs and weed beds squid have been caught in big numbers. 2-4m of water is a good place to start and the small squid jigs from 1.8 – 2.5 are a must in any anglers tackle box.

Customer Nick Bond fished from the Mornington Pier during the week. Using an old brown hayabusa jig he managed his bag of calamari in just 30 minutes. The calamari ranged between 1 – 1.5 kilos.

While fishing for gar's at Mornington on several occastions

last couple of weeks, and a friend on different times, we've

only seen the odd small squid come up on yhe usual

pattenoster, 1-1.5 jig Mornington method.

Hi salmon king, I must say I think the Cranbourne report does sound a bit overly positive. I never seen squid 1.5 kg caught at the pier. I think maybe they meant 150 grams <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

Hi Glen, Yeah 150gms is more likley there.

Also it's taken some time to collect a 10bag there recently.

More like 5 hours.

Never know though. Right place right time, 10 squid in 30min.

I'll be picking up a Stabi in a few weeks Glen.

Breaking away from LB to drift the weed beds.

Keen to try Flinders squid by boat. You keen?

hi SK. i think i lost my sea legs when i was in WA. we had a few boating disasters, ...the first was getting stranded with a radio with a flat battery and an EPIRB that did not work, and on another occasion we got bogged on a sand boat ramp which took us hours to recover from. i think i will stick to dry ground from now on. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> but I might head to flinders pier in the next month as soon as the weather improves a bit! i am at home with another cold today! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

Hey Glen.

Know a few people put off boats from bad experiences. Understand.

Hope your cold gets better soon.

Not much happening at Flinders today. 3-5pm for only 2 x 500gm squid.

Did bag out on the gars at Mornington earlier though.

I presume the Mornington paternoster method is a weighted line and a 1-1.5 jig hanging off on a 1m dropper.

Is that correct?

I presume the weight is there to counter the fast currents, how heavy do you usually go?
Never happier than on a quiet pier, on a cold, dark, wet night, with a bucket to sit on, pole in hand and a fully charged iPod.
Reply
there is no current at mornington. the weight is just to get to the bottom quickly.

Staff member Aaron fished off the Mornington Pier on Tuesday Night with best buddy Wayne Wills. Between

them they managed 16 calamari and both were using the 2.0 size Yamashita Natural in the Brown Colour.

went friday night, lots of people on the long pier and just a couple on the small pier out in front of the restaurant. Nobody was catching anything. Fella next to be had two small squid, and i mean REALLY small. Barely bigger than a #3.5 jig, I actually mistook them for small baitfish at first.

Wanted to head out tonight, after a few warm days and closer to the full moon I thought there could be a chance, but other things got in the way.

2.5 or smaller for there.

Thats why most people use sinkers/paternoster.
