Newport, Ri - 2008 Squid Season
Travis, I would highly suggest going with a boat. While I haven't killed them, the two times I went the squid consistently were biting the whole time. Yes it was slow, but I think if you have time, and you can stay for a while you will be catching all night. Most of the boats were lined up along the highway bridge, where it is low and close to the water. Some of them were killing the squid. You may want to try there. I had better luck near the SLOW, NO WAKE barge in about 25' of water. I think being around all the other boats with the crazy lighting was drawing the squid away from my boat and towards theirs. I only had 1 submersible green light, which worked much better when I moved to a secluded spot. We hope to be back up there on Saturday. Some of the squid we got were very big. I noticed alot of playing with the jigs too, not super aggressive, some drop offs, etc. Honestly, I think the whole harbor is packed with squid right now. My fish finder was going nuts whenever a wave of squid would come under the boat. Good luck.
Thanks for the info Stripey....I think I will try from the boat this weekend.

Calamari!

Herd reports of 5:00am squid but I just left the Causeway and they were bangging them as I left.. This was at 2:00pm today.

This is the first time I seen them in full Spring style.

So whoever said 2nd day after the New Moon was right.

Oh a little warning, it was real slow until 2:00

Good fishing <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />

That'd be me <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' /> unfortunately we fished from 7pm-2am last night and only had 14 squid to show for it. Most were larger females, ALL came on pinks, at varying depths. Going back out to GI to try again for a few hours now before heading back to CT. didn't see a single pod last night of over 20 squid or so. They were also very finicky but I found that if they came up behind the jig, i would sway it a bit to make it look like it was trying to escape and that seemed to get them to bite. Will report again later
Squid: The other other OTHER white meat
Fished from 11pm~3am caught about 30. mostly female. Watched them eat tiny bait fish and not my jigs. Tried several offerings, with little success on one jig versus another. Also, I witnessed quite a few 'teaser' bites. Either, there getting smarter or I'm getting inpatient.

Saw a school of Macks bolt under my light. With reports of Blues, Macks, and Striper already in the bay. I dont think our squid have much time to relax and enjoy the dangling pretty colors off the bridge.

I really dont want to miss 1~2 'wow' factor days. It drives me nuts. Could be tonight,or tommarrow, maybe Monday, Tuesday. I've been thinking this way since the middle of April. I'll give it another go this weekend.

Good luck out there.

WOW!, In Jamestown the squid are finally in. My buddy and I caught 13 squid in a 3 hour period. The squid were there even when the generator ran out of gas (4:00 a.m.) This is my first time ever catching multiple squid. It seems as if they would only be attracted to Blue/Pink Jigs. Do they have a preference? I have all the squid on ice; I will be cutting them later tonight. Can anyone give some pointers when cutting these creatures up.

Check out the "How To" section of the forum on cleaning squid.

hey joe,

cut at about an inch off on the pointy end side... grab the head/tentacles and gently pull out as to not rupture the ink sac... pull out the hard clear thing that runs along the body of the squid (you might need to slide your finger between it and the body)... you can remove the skin as well if you like

How long can you store squid inside the fridge before they started to go bad? I have my catch from last weekend (Saturday) and found one bag went bad (rotten smell) last night (that's 4 day in fridge). Lucky I did clean some squid Sat/Sun to enjoy their fresh taste.
I don't like to keep squid in the fridge for more than 1 day. If I pack on ice, then put in the fridge I might go 2 days. But the rule of thumb for me is what I dont eat within 1 day. I use my food saver to vacuum seal them then put in the freezer right away. The vacuum seal trick is magic because they taste fresh even though frozen.

When I freeze I dont clean them, just toss em in the food saver bags..
The trick to store them for a long period of time (up to a few years) and still have the freshness to it, is to put them in Freezer Zip Lock bag and fill it with some water. That way when you stacked them, they're not flattened. It keeps the squids whole and round. What ever you do, do not clean and then freeze them; they will go bad very very soon. I've practiced this method for about 20 years now and never had a problem. Hope this helps.
ok i'm heading out to GI right now... might swing by jamestown as well... wish me luck! look for me in the yellow rain coat =)

If they were cleaned, they should be edible still. If they aren't cleaned, they probably smell by now.

I respectfully disagree. They last very long time in the freezer even if they're previously cleaned, imho.

Ive been wearing my Grundens, rain or not LOL. Breaks the wind, and we all know how raw it's been the last week or so......
I am headed over there now, I don't have my red wagon this time.

Come and say hi.

DrC
These past few days have been great weather wise, compared to the past weekend. Hopefully the squid have noticed and are going to cooperate this weekend. I spoke to a guy last Sunday who went out on the francis fleet for squid. He got 14 and was high hook or close to it. Wind and seas were almost unbearable he said with some poor soul begging to come back to land. lol, <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' /> I know what that is like. I will be making my way up Friday night and bringing the spare reflectors I've made. Please send me a personal email if you want one, or somehow let me know who to save them for. I only have 5 or 6 spares.

Pearldiver
I think I'm gonna head over for a bit.......was torn but now looking at the forecast for the next few nights, tonite looks nice LOL

Can't pull an all-nighter tho tonite! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/innocent.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' />
just got back from Newport. Aside from sunburn, here's what our 14hrs of fishing yielded:

15 squid (only 1 today <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' /> )

1 sea robin on a pink yozuri last night

We said we were only going to fish for a couple hours today but you know how that goes <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />. Wound up fishing from 11-4pm. The action was Sloooooow most of the day and I got bored at one point so I tied up my schoolie rod w/ a 2oz Tsunami ball jig topped w/a squid strip to see what was doing. I wound up catching 3 skates, 2 starfish, 4 clams and a piece of rope. I also dropped a big squid on this same combo. Damn cannibals! LOL.

The only squid i managed to catch today was a decent size at least. I told my buddy I would freeze it whole and save it as my Doormat "secret weapon" There were a couple decent frenzy's today but nothing worth making a long ride for. The most I saw of anyone on the bridge was one guy w/ a half bucket. I saw him there last night and don't think he ever left.

I did see some ppl catching on greens today though. The loatian guys were there again (if the one w/ the black hat is a member, I gotta hand it to you man, you've got skills.) He actually had a following at one point. He'd jig up squid casting far out w/ a 3 jig setup. He'd pull one in and then everyone would fish next to him. He'd move and the crowd would move with him. I'm sure it was annoying for him but it was funny to watch all these people running back and forth with buckets.

It was nice to meet those of you I ran into last night/today. Skane, good to meet ya man. You didn't miss much last night or today.
Squid: The other other OTHER white meat
I will be cooking some squid tonight, any good
