has anyone ever tried chumming with dead bait fish in order to attract the squid??

btw... out of curiosity... what does everyone do for a living? just wanted to get a census of the career backgrounds of everyone here. i'm a computer technician...
Back from work, and I kinda assumed the bite would have been here in full force by now- guess I was wrong. I'll be at GI tonight to try my luck.

(havent really used it. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' /> ) Fisherman at heart. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/fishing.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' />
i know this is a little off the topic, but what do you guys do after the spring squid season run? i just started blue crab harvesting last year, summer scup, fall skip jacks and tautogs... i would like to get more into stripers and flounder, but don't know the fishing techniques or spots to fish for them.

Striper, striper, striper. Did I miss striper?....After the squid start the fade it becomes primetime striper fishing. Basically the gap between the squid and blues. It's not really all that complicated. The hardest part is figureing out what kind of offerings. Unlike blues, Striper are very picky and nortiously lazy. Trying to match what kind of bait fish their currently feeding on is key. Local bait shops can always give you pointers. I usally start with squid and sandworms, then move into macks and pogeys, and finally end the year with bellies and eels. When it comes to plugs things get a little more complicated. Along the same lines of offerings, certain plugs only work at certain times of day, tide, location. A good begginer lure would be a Castmasters or Storm shads I.M.O. There really is not one set technique, every fisherman I know does things a little diffrently. ( hook type, mono/steel leader, jig setup ) The trick really comes down to setting the hook. Location is important, most anglers are not to keen on giving up spots. However, if you spend time driving around the water you will surely find good locations.

Tight lines.

Heading down tonight, need to try out my new generator <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' /> . I'll probably be setup at the corner near the basketball court. come say "hi". Hoping for better luck then last nights reports. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/clover.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' /> . If Spawn was going we would definitely be catching. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />

Spawnle, when the tide was getting full they came back in. Small ones at first at about 12, then a couple schools of larger ones, I left at 2AM. Good to see you again buddy, maybe next time we will see if your generator is working! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' /> See you soon.

I'm pretty sure I was the guy standing next to you guys from about 7:30-10. We didn't catch a thing but you had 2 or 3 by the time we left. My 12volt floating light was trumped by your setup but we still had fun and will def. be back this week. Hopefully we'll see you down there.

To answer my own question...I only saw squid caught on pink and blue yo-zuris, just as you guys said.

A few things to add to what Tatonka said: I would get some Kastmasters AND some storm shads, not one or the other because spoons like k.m. and Krocodiles (another great spoon) tend to ride high in the water column so are good when the fish are near the top or in shallow water but unless you're vertical jigging them like from a boat you're going to have a hard time fishing very deep with them unless you fish them reeeeeaaaally slow and then they get hung up pretty easy with their treble hooks.

On the other hand, lures like Storm Shads or lead heads (including bucktails) with a soft plastic, pork rind, squid strip etc. on the hook, are great for fishing not just the upper water column (If you use light ones at a fairly fast retreive) but are great for fishing down near the bottom where most of the BIG stripeys hang out. These lures also get hung up a lot less because of their single up-pointing hook and cost less to replace than most good spoons.

As far as location, s. bass move around a lot but mostly they'll be where the feeding is easiest and food most plentiful.

Other than that I would say; the best teacher is spending a lot of time on the water and trying different times, tides, spots etc. Good luck.

p.s. The Storm Shads and jigs are also great for Fluke (summer flounder).
Hey whats good rhody? Well, just dropped by in the introduce thread, as im new to the forum.

Got my 1st squid in over 14/15 yrs, possibly longer. WOW, has it been a long time! Tried in the am with a friend for about 4 hrs...was pretty slow. Only a few..but better than the skunk. Back again tomorrow.

Hope everyone is catching. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />

It looks like things are starting to warm up at GI. Will bring the boat up there next weekend for a go at it. Will keep you all posted. Snaildarter.
I am a newbie to this posting stuff. Still learning. I was at GI last night from 7:30 to 11PM.

slow night, only got 1/2 dozen. Interested in the label/tag idea to let other squiders know who you are. Also I'm from New Haven area in CT. Hoping to hook up with fellow squiders to share the ride.

I'll be back to GI very soon.
