What makes a good Eging reel ? - lighter - 21-03-2011

Hi,

I'm first time poster and haven't experience with squid fishing.

In fact I haven't done with lure fishing before.

So I need some opinions on reels.

What makes a good eging reel?

I always thought any lure fishing require a reel with high gear ratio, like well above 5.0.

However, after a bit of research, found that those common eging reels don't have high gear ratio at all..

eg/

Daiwa Emeraldas 4.8

Daiwa E-Gee with 4.7

Shimano Sephia BB with 5.0

Am I correct to assume that high speed retrieve is not used in eging ?

Sorry for such a novice question but I could not find any obvious answer on the net...

Also what other feature of reel is important ?

Solid drag vs ball bearings vs shallow spool etc...

Thanks for your help.

You want a reel that is light in weight and it has a smooth drag on it.

So the Gear Ratio on a reel does not matter much ?

What's the Gear Ratio on your squid jigging reel ?

What makes a good Eging reel ? - fishnhook - 23-03-2011

The gear ratio really dosn't matter for squid fishing i have a daiwa emeraldas 2506 and the ratio on that is 4.9

what i find is more inportant is the rod you use to play the squid as you try to bring it in.

Thanks for your tip fishnhook~

Can you recommend a decent rod under $150 ?

For the reel, I actually have a spare and am just wondering if it would be sufficient...

It's Shimano Nasci C3000 and it looks like this:

After reading your post about the gear ratio, only thing that concerns me is the deep spool.

It takes 150m of 12lb mono.

How much line would you use if you are fishing landbased ?

Thanks.

One rod you can have a look at is the shimano sephia au i think there around that price bracket

and for the reel the shimano nasci will do the job but i would go down one size like a 2500 you dont

need 3000 size for squid fishing and for the amount of line you use for landbase no more than 80 metre's

that reel would have plenty that's why alot of squid reel's run shallow spool's.

shimano sephia au looks good and fits my budget.

For the reel, I might look for a shallow spool which is compatible to my reel.

So what size of braid lines do eging fishos use most commonly ?

And squid jig size ?? Is it 2.5 ?

I'm just after most basic setup to start the whole thing...

Thanks.

What makes a good Eging reel ? - fishnhook - 25-03-2011

The size of braid i would run is 8 to 10 pound and jig size is most manly i use 2.5 to 3.0 size all

depends on water depth and current were you fish.

Hi mate,

befor you pick a reel, line, jig or anything else you need to figure out where you will do most of your squid fishing? will you be egging?

are you going to want to use same rod/reel to catch fish or are you going to take 2 rods to the pier?

i can source purpose built squid/cuttlefish rods reels cheap, also top brand jigs cheaper than anyone else.

What reel brand?

Are the handles screw in, or the cheap slide in type?

Shallow spools?

What makes a good Eging reel ? - masejess33 - 30-10-2011

daiwa..

mate you dont need a shallow spool, i have used a current certate 2500r for egging and i cast as far as my shallow spool egee 2605w,

all the big name jigs all cheap

You're correct, but I still prefer the shallow spools.

Less weight all round, and I found better casting distance.

Could be the spool design though.
