Results of studies and researches showed that there were about 69 species under Cephalopod in the territorial waters of Viet Nam. Nautiloidea subclass in Viet Nam had only one species, i.e. nautilus pompilius and Coleoidea had 68 species belonging to 23 genus, 13 families, 3 orders. The common and high-value species include pharaoh cuttlefish (Sepia pharaonis), kislip cutlefish (S.lycidas), broadclub cutlefish (S.latimanus), golden cuttlefish (S.esculenta), bigfin reef squid (Sepioteuthis lessoniana), mitre squid (Loligo chinensis), swordtip squid (L.edulis), marbled octopus (Octopus dollfusi), short arm octopus (Octopus ocellatus), common octopus (O.vulgaris). All the cephalopod products of Viet Nam come from fishing. There have been some studies on the biological characteristics of these species for the aquaculture purposes, however the results are not yet available. Fishing season: Cephalopods could be caught all year around. However, there are two main fishing seasons for these species: In the North: dry season (from December â March) In the South: rainy season (Jun â October) Fishing gears: most popular fishing gears include purse seine, gill net, squid hand line and falling net. Exports: the annual export volume of Cephalopods is estimated to be 50,000-60,000 tons, worth about $150 in value. Processing products: most of processing products are frozen, e.g. Block, IQF, semi-IQF, frozen on tray, vacuum packing. Their forms of processing include fillet, steak, flowered, ready-to-eat, sushi, fried squid, dried seasoned grinding squid, etc. Markets: the Cephalopods of Viet Nam are exported to Japan, other Asian countries /territories, U.S., EU, and other countries with the percentage of 30%, 23%, 3%,14% and 30% respectively.
