Went down to cape jervis and rapid bay (south oz) yesterday and was outsquidded 5 to 2 by an amatuer. He caught his first squid with his first cast for the day, and continued on. He even caught the first torpedo (arrow) squid that i have ever seen. Do these taste the same as sthn calamari??

I'd love to tell you that Arrows are as nice as calamari....but they're not. They are more rubbery and less flavoursome, so I like to marinade them in garlic, marjoram and olive oil for a couple of hours before I fry them to give them a bit more flavour (either that or use them as bait!). Freezing them also makes them less tough. There are a few threads relating to arrow squid edibility in the chat boards. I usually don't marinade calamari (they're tasty enough by themselves). How do you usually cook squid?

Oh well, i my mate took the arrow squid, so hopefully it isnt too bad and he cant tell the difference.
As for cooking - i just throw em straight on the Barbie!

Hey Guys!
Looks like ill be hitting my favourite squidding jetty yet again, early this coming Sunday morning. Hopefully it will be more successful than my last trip down there. This time though im going with my more reliable mate, with whom i have quite often caught bags of squid 10+ weighing up to 3kg each, so lets hope come sunday night my freezer is bulging with squid tubes!

made the trek down to the cape jervis jetty
arrived just as the last ferry run was pulling in, my jigging partner 'sir squidalot' once again scored a decent size squid on the 1st cast
lots of squid to be had by myself and sir squidalot, i think over 10 in an hour and a half. biggest one was quite large, maybe 1kg
the locals couldnt hook into them at all!

Yes was a productive session at the ol' cape. Just counted the catch & we got 10 on the mark. Two where very good size & one is near a kg. Will try & get some pics. of our catch up soon. nb - watch out for drunk locals squidding on the jetty as they almost took sir squidalot's face off with a jig on a number of occasions
we nicknamed this guy 'danger mouse'

Nathan torpedo squid are horrid to eat they are a lot harder to chew than normal squid. i was there about 3 weeks ago and caught about 15 torpedos and 4 large squid.
