San Francisco, CA - Guest - 14-11-2003 Dear all, I need help on the west coast to know what squid spots are available to me. I have bought squid jig but not yet fished. I live in San Francisco. Thankyou to all in advance. Will San Francisco, CA - Guest - 07-02-2005 They are catching the giant Humbolt squid north of the Cordell Banks off small boats & sportfishing charter boats out of Bodega Bay- aproximately 25 miles out in 400' of water. There are reports of squid spotted west of Half Moon bay closer into shore. I'm sure boats will be fishing there soon. San Francisco, CA - Guest - 08-02-2005 The numbers are roughly 05 & 25. A couple boats are going out of Half Moon Bay on February 8, to see if we can find some further down the coast. Our success may be tracked on www.coastsidefishingclub.com Tom Mattusch Huli Cat www.hulicat.com San Francisco, CA - glen - 08-02-2005 hi tom, thanks for that info. San Francisco, CA - glen - 30-12-2005 Has anyone heard of giant humboldt squid turning up in Californian waters this year? The following reports suggests the humboldts MAY be in the area - San Francisco Chronicle Thursday, December 29, 2005 Quote:...Mattusch also is on the lookout for Humboldt squid, the very same species he hounded through last winter. He made an exploratory trip a few weeks back, marked what he thought were squid, then eventually gave up in the Mattusch version of extreme frustration: "No one could reach the bottom with the way the wind was going, pushing the boat sideways. That's just how it goes. Santa Cruz Sentinal December 22, 2005 Quote:Bayside Marine's Todd Fraser made a foray out to the Monterey Bay Marine Canyon area in search of the giant Humboldt squid this week. Fishing in 700 feet of water, Fraser hoped to find schools of giant squid that frequented the area last winter. These squid can weigh up to 40 pounds each, are quite edible and provide a terrific fight on heavy tackle for the intrepid angler. He did not find any of the squid this time, but a skipper in the San Francisco area reported catching a few Humboldts last week in the Cordell Banks area, which buoys the hopes of our local squid anglers for some good mid-winter action. Their 19 anglers had the squid piled a foot thick on the deck with a final count of 412 of the beasts to 42 pounds. They are offering trips daily out of the Emeryville Sport Center. Link And there is a similar report at mercurynews.com (Posted on Thu, Jan. 26, 2006): Quote:Craig Stone of Emeryville Sportfishing said the first giant squid trip Friday yielded excellent results for the New Salmon Queen out of Emeryville. Friday's trip brought in 228 giant squid to 40 pounds for the 17 anglers aboard. They were fishing 20 miles off the Marin County coastline. All the squid ranged from 20-40 pounds and were taken off of squid jigs. They were able to bring the squid up to just 10-20 feet under the boat, which contributed to the large catch. Boats will be back out through Sunday this week, weather permitting.
