Humboldt Squid at Point Lobos - Guest - 09-12-2003

though someone might be interested in these images i shot this past friday (December 5) at Point Lobos State Reserve. I was diving there and just before we started to head home, someone noticed something pinkish on the beach in the distance shooting water into the air. when we climbed down the rocks to the beach, we found 20 humboldt squid which had beached themselves (possibly biotoxins from red algae blooms?). they were still alive and changing colors, quirting water and ink. really amazing and beautiful, if not a little sad...

Hi Dawn,

Thanks for those photos. Have you heard of lots of squid dying like this before? Is it possible that they just finished spawning?

none of the people there (including some who have been diving since the mid-70's) said they have ever seen anything like this before. one of the rangers at the part was also puzzled by this but recalled that he heard something about this happening further north (at moss landing) due to red algae blooms (which deliver a biotoxin).

if anyone does have a theory. let me know. i'd be very interested in find out more about this.

Hello Dawn, and everyone!

WOW-I love your photos of Point Lobos! I recall visitng this park years ago with my Dad. I have NEVER forgotten the beauty of this place! This park has stayed in my heart all these years as a very special place GOD created for us to enjoy.

I have always wanted to go back there and now I want to do so even more! I want my friend to see it as well. You really made me happy to see this place once again besides having its memories in my heart.

THANK YOU DAWN!!!!!!!

That's amazing! But could they not have been collected and eaten rather than being left to die on the sand? I mean if they were dying anyway, why let them go to waste?
