Keeping squid alive - arthur - 07-01-2004 Apart from not being very good at catching the critters, am having a bit of problem keeping them alive in a live bait tank. I like to use them as bait for kingfish. Any suggestion would be most appreciated. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Keeping squid alive - Jazman - 07-01-2004 Hi Arthur, I'd imagine your live bait well would get quite inky if you had a few squid in it! If you put them in a net hanging over the side of the boat (I just hang the landing net over the side) they'd have fresh water the whole time, although I'm not sure if they'd last for much more than a few hours ( I guess for targetting jewies you would be putting in all night sessions). Hope you solve your problem Jaz <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Keeping squid alive - glen - 13-01-2004 I have kept them alive in a bucket for some time. But make sure the water is clean. If the squid squirt ink in the water i think this would be a bad thing! An aerator would help too. You can buy small battery operated ones. Best of luck, Glen Keeping squid alive - beakman - 17-04-2004 I kept them in a bucket for quite a while, put them in a basket that fits in a bucket and as soon as they ink, lift the basket with the squid in it and replace the bucket of water frequently.should last for ages. beakman :online2long: Keeping squid alive - Mr_Willy - 18-04-2004 Replacing water does the same as an aerator......... Would be very hard to stop them inking.............Make sure before you put them in, they squirt ink, and put them in very calmly..........dont just drop them in there........may have more of a chance........... Keeping squid alive - Paulus - 20-04-2004 ive had alot of trouble keeping the squid alive. i thought that they had to keep moving to stay alive, mainly because if i stuck them into s small puddle, they would immediately propel inthe water, and once they were still, they had alot of trouble "breathing". i guess i was wrong HAHA Keeping squid alive - smellyfish - 23-04-2004 I ahve read where they use the cheap plastic clothes baskets to keep the squid in. You just need to attach some flotation to the basket and away you go. Keeping squid alive - Guest - 27-04-2004 i go kingfishing all the time, we have a live bait tank about 80cm by 60cm, we have had 12 squid in the tank at one time they were in there for about five hours, we have a bildge pump on all the time pumping fresh water threw it, some also ink the tank when put in if they havnt inked in the water first but the pump eventually fluhes it all out again and the seem very happy, they stay clear in colour and only change colours when we pull them out and put a hook in them, as soon as there in water again there back to there normal selves. We have even had them down for live bait and nothing has touched them put them back in the tank moved elsewhere no kings and then released them and they just swim off, so get a bildge pump ours pumps 360 gallons an hour and its fine for us. good luck Keeping squid alive - Steve O'Shea - 18-07-2004 It's all in the shape of the tank; I'm not surprised that you had good results with a bucket. Try a slightly larger, cylindrical bait tank (rather than square/rectangular), and a spray bar (to aerate the water) or regular water changes, rather than a point-source current (from a hose). You should be able to keep them going several days. Keeping squid alive - Guest - 31-07-2004 The hoop nets coarse fishermen use are good for storing livies. The one I use is about six foot long so over crowding isnt a problem. Keeping squid alive - Guest - 09-02-2005 I was out squidding last night. And i had two squid in a bucket, was going for the third and i looked over and the squid were jumping out of the bucket! I put them in a keepers net after that but they died pretty quick - i think they got stressed out when their legs got all caught in the netting. Nlok Keeping squid alive - Pamela - 13-06-2012 Hi there, I see the latest post on this issue is from 2005. I was wondering if anybody had some recent experiences keeping squid alive for a few days, or if you know how can this be done. Thanks! Pamela Keeping squid alive - cjvictoria - 15-10-2012 The bucket is good temporary. Have to keep alive them in a tank of water which has fileration option. Keeping squid alive - Tommy Truong - 02-03-2014 Hi all, Â Im a newcomer and ive been squidding for a couple months. i started to collect baits but now i do enjoy it alot. I am landbased and i have my bucket submerged in water, that keeps squids alive for a couple hours but when the time comes to use for king, most of them was dead, i fish through the night for jew and morning for king. would really appreciate if anyone could suggest a better way to keep them ALIVE Â thanks everyone |
