St Leonards, VIC - aok47 - 26-04-2004

Hello again,...

Had quick 1.5hr fish at St leonards pier yesterday. Never having fished this pier before i decided on starting where i saw alot of ink marks <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />

I caught 1 small and 1 medium sized calamari. Both took a size 2 green razorback. Had a trickle of burley going and a float rig out with size 10 long shanks, float submerged twice but i failed to hook the fish <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':wh' />

Happy with my efforts though,... <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Cry' />

hey aok47

I was down at St Leonards ON TUESDAY NIGHT 20/04/04 And saw a man with his wife fishing for squid, they both fished opposite end of the peir and caught about 8 between the two of them, the old guy said he lived down there and caught a few each night but hadnt bagged out for a long time and that people who came to fish there generaly went home with two or three only Squid Fishing from Both Queenscliff and St leonards peirs are very poor at the moment and has been for over the past months while over the Mornington side of the bay they are in huge numbers

Fished St Leonards pier a few nights ago for 1 small squid, my first ever on a Pink Yo Zuri so im satisfied, but it wasnt exactly hot action alot of people were squid fishing the pier and i was the only person who managed a squid so i guess its pretty quiet, wouldnt like to rely on a night there for some Jew Bait, but the Gars are going good down there so i suppose they'l do

Hello all, I'm new to squid fishing and have just moved to St. Leonards and am going to try fishing off the pier. What is the best rod and bait to use?

St Leonards, VIC - Jazman - 10-05-2005

Hi Mick, welcome to squidfish. I've been to St Leonards, but never fished there so I can't advise about that location specifically, but in terms of gear you'll need:

-A longish rod (6-9 feet) paired with an eggbeater with 8-12 pound line

-Artificial prawn squid jigs (Yo-zuri and yamashita are 2 reputable brands, in pink or green, sizes 2.0, 2.5, or 3.0) OR

-Baited jags - with pilchards, silver whiting, yellowtail, mullet, or pretty much any small fish.

Generally you'll catch smaller squid on the artificial jigs, bigger ones on the baited jags.

There is a lot of info on gear if you trawl back through some of the older threads.

Good luck

Jaz

thanks Jaz,

have seen a lot of locals using the reallly long rod with line tied to the end and no reel. i think they call them aussie poles.

hey guys

St.Leonard can be a bit hit and miss on the squid situation but when they come on the bite it can really fire up

St.Leonards has been very unreliable for squid but talk to other locals ,one old chap I see there all the time with his wife says that of late he has been taking around 6 or seven squid a night but it takes him a good four or five hours to get them working the whole peir.

I have found though at times when people have gone home empty handed that the squid are hiding in packs in the corners on the inner side of the peir where the boats tie up. generaly any type of lure works well in this area but poles dont work as well and spinning for them is the number one method used

St Leonards, VIC - meggsie - 09-10-2007

G'day guys,

This is my first report.

A mate and I fished out from St.Leonards yesterday during the slack water high tide.

Wind was a westerly at around 5knots and the water was reasonably clear (you could see the bottom in around 12 foot).

I had no trouble taking 10 squid up to 2.5kg using a black Yo-Zuri size 3.5, although my mate was using several different colours (apart from black) and only managed 4 small squid.

As the tide picked up the squid went off the bite.
