Tried for calamari off Cowes pier on saturday night but didnt get any however,....

I lost the biggest octopus i have ever seen!!! this things was scary!

I thought i had a snag and proceeded to walk backward to snap the line, all of a sudden i was "unstuck" but there was a big big weight on the end, got it up to the surface and freaked <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':woot:' /> At first i though cuttlefish but then saw the long tentacles and knew it was a +5kg occie. We had a couple of gaff shots at it but the tip kept slipping, after the 3rd shot it let go <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/crying.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Cry' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/crying.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Cry' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/crying.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Cry' />

it was an awesome site under the full moon,...

Hi AK, bad luck about the occy, I've never caught any squid off Cowes pier, only those smelly swell sharks.

I had a drift around in the rowboat off Chelsea on Sunday afternoon, caught 2 small squid and lost 2, and all action was on the Yamashita 1.8, nothing on size 2.0 jigs at all, I think that the tiny squid are back! No other fish either, no gars or flathead despite a massive berley slick, bay seems pretty quiet ATM.

Hi Guys

Pete and I caught this big occy out deep off cowes, it weighed about 4kg, maybe more I'm not sure though, the legs were 1 inch thick. We caught it on a pilly at slack tide. I netted it and through it straight in a bucket that has a lid. That was it till we went home. I put it in the freezer as is, and got my father inlaw to cook it.

He is the king with cooking occy. He cleaned it and then soaked it in apple cider vinegar for 3 hrs, then fired the webber up and cooked it on there. It was the most softest occy I have eaten for its size, I thought it would have been so tough. We will try to target these bigger ones, but I think its just a bonus by-catch. "A tasty one at that"

Rob - thats getting closer to the size of the one we caught- it was simply massive, and one of the coolest things ive ever seen - im spewing i didnt have a camera with me. My mate pulled it up on his mulloway gear - he had a live tommy bait out - hoping to tempt a passing mully or snapper, or maybe even shark, and when he went to check it, he had a heap of weight, and we thought it was weed, then as it broke the surface we thought i was a massive squid. But then when he dropped it on the jetty we almost fell over - have since heard they make awesome bait - shouldve kept it i feel.........ate some, used some for bait......maybe next time

Rob - what did u do with it once you caught it - the one we got wouldnt stop bloody moving!!!

Cheers!

Hi Mr_Willy

Once I netted it we had it on the floor of the boat still in the net. I grabbed a bucket I had burley in and cleaned it out, picked up the net and turned it up side down into the bucket. Your right the occy didn't stop moving, he had his legs through each sepperate hole in the net, I thought it would have been a nightmare trying to get him out but he just popped straight into the bucket, easier than i thought. The bucket had a lid of course.

I have heard that if you turn there head inside out they die!!! Sounds easier said than done. Or pull half there head over there eyes they die.

On killing Octopus

I once went out in a boat with my dad years ago with one of his italian mates.

His mate pulled in a decent sized occy, picked it up and bit it hard just behind the eyes. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' />

The occy went limp VERY quickly.

If you feel up to it, a good fanging seems to do the job. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/crying.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' />

....Must go now...........feeling a little ill.

my dad has told me the same thing...

just have to be quick so occie doesnt get a chance to wrap itself around your face!!
