Hey lbgfreak,

Ive never personally targetted kingies off the rocks, but i can give you some tips which ive picked up from people i know who do.

Firstly, your gear needs to be very sound, as kingfish have some awesome power from hookup. A well conditioned 24kg outfit would do the job well enough. Fishing from the rocks, i would assume a 10 or 12ft stick would be the go, and the best bet would be an overhead of some description, unless you have trouble casting with these. Braided line in the 40-50lb class would be the way to go, to aviod being cut off on the rocks. As for leaders, kingfish aren't very prone to destroying these, so probably a bimini twist knot to a 60lb leader would be enough. I would then either use a squidding float, or a balloon if conditions suit to float the bait out into the strike zone. Best baits would be live baits - something like gar, or squid - otherwise whole fresh gar, squid, squid heads would the next best bet. Otherwise if all else fails, most live fish will be taken by kingies, or a well presented dead bait could also get a strike.

I dont know what the kingfish are like in the area you fish, but here in SA, they grow to monstrous sizes, although all the farmed escapees are making it hard. In one are they are regulary caught between 30 and 60lbs, which would soon sort out your tackle if its not quite right!!

Hope ive helped you somehow!

Cheers!

Nathan
