Cleaner Squid Cleaning - Scuba - 30-10-2004

On a nice sunny day on the Yorke Peninsula a mate and I bagged about 20 squid and thought mmmmm.. now we have to clean them <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/crying.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> .

I recalled a friend told me once that he puts his squid in a fish scaler bag and towed behind the boat on the way in so it was decided to give it a go.

Well what a success...!!!

The squid came out of the bag skinless and inkless and all that was required was to pull the heads and gut.

From now on I for one will be using this method...!!!

People.... Give this a go....!!!!

Regards... Scuba

Apparently if you remove the heads from your squid prior to driving home and do the same thing, it will be totally clean!!

where could i get 1?

and 4 how much?

A sacler bag is simiar to a keeper bag but a little more sturdy.

You tow it behind your boat and at twists and bounces around skinning/scaling your catch, also knocks the ink out of the squid.

Available from all good tackle stores.

That's great news, I spent bloody hours claning our squid from the weekend. How many squid in the bag at once scuba? And how fast were you dragging them, and for how long?

By the way, I'm guessing that by your name you dive a bit? Where do you go usually?

Cheers

We had 18 in the bag Jaz, just got up on the plane and towed them about 5-10 mins...

Beats the hell out of cleaning by hand...

Yes do a bit of diving in Mt Gambier caves, Kangaroo Is and yourke Peninsula all in SA.

Excellent, I'll give the scaler bag a go next time I get some squid (bought one yesterday, $7.95).

Mt Gambier caves is freshwater right? There are some sink holes here in Vic that people dive, I've heard some horror stories about them silting up and people not being able to find the way out <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' />

I'm strictly saltwater, I dive a lot along the great ocean road for crays, and around Port Phillip heads for great scenery. I also went to Heron Island, South West Rocks (Fish Rock) and Julian Rocks (Byron Bay) for a trip last year, Heron would have to be the most amazing site I have dived, for the sheer numbers of fish and pristine coral. And Fish Rock must have the largest congregation of HUGE crays in Australia......would have easily seen 300+ in 1 dive......but they're protected! Do you chase crays at all? Season opens here in Vic next Tuesday, can't wait!! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' />

By the way is that your boat (the twin hulled beast?) Nice!

Cave diving in the south east is a VERY safe sport for trained divers. The deaths that occured a long time ago was people the were either inexperienced and breaking the rules or untrained people who were nto supposed to be there. Cave diving is a great experience and is very adventurous and rewarding... Go try...!!!

Yes that is my boat.... Excellent dive boat...!!!

Concurred, works exactly as explained.

A bit difficult to use a scaler bag if you don't have a boat.  Check out www.squidezy.com.au to find out how to clean squid with a bit of style.
