A Rare Opportunity...fishing For Humboldt Squid - glen - 09-03-2005

I found an article on http://www.tackletour.com that provides a very practical explanation of how to go about fishing for Humboldt Squid in California waters. The article was by Zander and was published on 23 Feb 2005.

Zander recomends using the 2 foot-long Ahi USA Giant Squid jigs to use as primary baits for giant squid. However it is also possible to make large homemade squid jigs from diamond jigs and bars. The article includes a photo of one such homemade lure.

I also found some impressive photos of the Ahi squid jigs in action on the Ahi USA website - http://www.ahiusa.com/

Here is a sample photo. All credits to Ahi USA.

A Rare Opportunity...fishing For Humboldt Squid - SHUTUPANDFISH - 05-04-2005

I recently had the opportunity to fish for Humbolts off the coast of southern CA. in the beginning of Feb. We had 17 poeple aboard and caught 97 nice squid. I now have apx. 100 lbs of cleaned calamari steaks in the freezer and was wondering if anyone has a few good recipies? So far my favorite has been to BBQ them over mesquite wood. They come out tasting a bit like lobster! I'm glad to have had the experience because it is so rare for them to be in these waters. (So I was told.)
