Hi everyone,

There was an interesting article on "The Age" website about cannibalism in Giant Squid-

The article is titled Giant squid partial to a bit of calamari and explains that Australian researchers have discovered evidence that Giant Squid are cannibals.

Scientists at the University of Tasmania team have been testing the stomach contents of a Giant Squid that had been caught by commercial fisherman off Tasmania's west coast in 1999. The scientists found 3 tentacles and 12 squid beak fragments all belonging to a giant squid in the stomach.

Looking at the agressive behaviour of male squid toward each other during mating season it dosnt surprise me that giant squid are cannabals

But yet some females of the human species can show the same behavior

Ive nearly been eaten alive for being late <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />

The debate continues to rage on whether giant squid are cannibalistic or not.

Giant squid's sex life revealed

The bizarre sex life of the giant squid is one of the topics at an international cephalopod conference in Hobart this week.

Marine biologists are continuing to unlock the secrets of the giant squid, saying the deep-sea monster may not be a cannibal as previously thought.

It was thought the species was cannibalistic when parts of a fellow giant squid were found in the stomach of a specimen caught off Tasmania's west coast in 1999.

But New Zealand based marine biologist Steve O'Shea believes that was the result of some bizarre mating methods.

He says the creatures do not mean to eat each other but the females accidentally bite bits off of the males during mating.

"It's not intentional cannibalism, it's certainly inadvertent," he said.
