Spearing Help - bream addict - 12-09-2005

hey all, ive been doin a fair bit of squidding around melb lately and been doin pretty well, but im getting a bit bored, dont get me wrong i love squid but im just looking to broaden my fishing horizons a bit ,ive done a fair bit of wading with a haiwaian sling, and just a plain throw spear, but im looking at purchasing a spear gun and targeting things like leatheries snapper etc,so it would be much appreciated if u guys could tell me the basics i need to start spearing and shops around melb that have good stock and relatively cheap prices, some suggestions on brands/models would also be much appreciated.finally if some of u blokes could give me some spots to start my spearing relatively close to melbourne it would be much appreciated also, thanks in advance,BA. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

hi BA,

given that your tag is "bream addict" i figured that squid was only part of the picture!

there is already another topic on buying spearguns so have a look and see if it helps you -

i would not mind trying spear fishing this year. i have a 4mm wet suit which should be good enough. In the past I have been reluctant due to my fear of sharks coming to inspect my catch! I was just reading through an old book about spear fishing (called "Spearfishing in Victoria" by Barry Andrewartha) which describes the entire victorian coastline. the book is very old but in any case, it suggests that some very good spear fishing is to be had in Victoria. Areas around Phillip Island and Kilcunda are recommended.

Inside the bay it says the spear fishing is not that great. However, some of the better spots are Brighton, Sandringham and Black Rock.

All the best, Glen <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Just get yoursel some goggles and flippers and the like and get around the reefs with a hawain sling. Thats all ya need realy. It'll get you used to the diving and where to look for the fish without having to worry about reloading spear guns and getting tangled up in the string. Often spear guns arent as good as a hawain sling anyway.

lol this amuses me as my friends dad told me us a story when we went on our annual spearfishing/fishing trip. 1 day when my friends dad (noel and his mate) were spearing at the great barrier reef (or around that area) a 2m black tipped reef shark started eating the fish of their float, noel was a bit annoyed but he was glad the shark was eating the fish and not him. anyways the other guy he was out with saw what the shark was doing and got mad. he swam over to the shark, and grabbed it around the stomach, and eventually manhandled the shark into a nearby boat that their friends were on!!! the people on the boat jumped off and they all eventually got into the boat and headed back to camp. he was a hero that night and they had flake for dinner for a week! a hero lol... a crazy 1 though.
