What Kind Of Squid Is This? - squid head - 09-02-2006
Hello , can anyone tell me what kind of squid this is??? I got this in the belly of an adult harp seal, here on the east coast of canada, Ive seen them before in the belly of seals but this one wasnt eaten to long ago so i cleaned it up and took a picture.We call it '' bottle arse squid''or bottle ass squid.I know that aint the correct name ,its just something that the old fishermen has put on them,We never see them only in the bellies of adult seals which tell us thay are in deep, deep water. Can any one identify it?

My best guess is a bobtail squid..it lives in that part of the world...check out the link for photos.

Bobtail squid with rather flabby mantle. ML. 32mm. Chocolate brown in color. Anterior end of dorsal mantle triangurlaly protruded. Fins very large with base attaining some 70ï¼ ML, anterior lobe exceeds mantle margin. Eye enormous. Arm sucker biserial. Arm â ¢ rather long. Tentacle club not expanded but long, with heavily crowded minute suckers. Distrbuted in deep sea mainly from the Davis Straits down to New England.

Thanks Glen,iam not sure if it had fins on the sides of it though,maybe they are .broken down and gone seeing it was food for a few hours!haah do ya know if they travel in schools??or just alone? do anyone catch them when they come to the shallow waters to spawn? and how shallow do they come?

Found a few of those in some yellowfin tuna bellies this past fall while trolling the canyons... I had never seen one until then.
