Fishing In Fiji - glen - 15-09-2006

Hi everyone,

I wanted to post a few photos of fishing in Fiji. Fishing on the main island of fiji (called viti levu) is actually a bit awkward because much of the island is surrounded by mangroves, and there is very few access roads to the water. Most tracks leading to the water are not even sign-posted so unless you have a very good map you will have a hard time getting to the water!

The best fishing is to be had on the outer islands where there is clean water, coral reefs and nice sand beaches. Most of the water around Viti Levu is dirty and there is no coral in site!

Barracuta near Tavua

The following image is of a barracuta (or something like a barracuta) taken on a soft plastic off a wharf on Viti Levu near the township of Tavua.

Fishing near Tavua

This small Giant Trevally was caught on the same wharf near Tavua. We hooked and almost landed a much bigger one (maybe 5kg) but the line broke when we tried to lift it from the water.

Fishing near rakiraki

This unknown fish was taken off a rocky breakwater near Rakiraki (where a boat takes locals to Malake Island). These fish have sharp spines on their gill covers so care was needed handling them. We also caught lots of small trevally at this location.

Fiji Reef Fish

Here are some pictures of fish that we caught when we went out on a fishing boat for the day. We left from Vuda Point north of Nadi and South of Lautoka. It cost us $450 (Fijian dollars) for the boat for half a day. This was about the cheapest we could get. Others were asking for $700 which is insane! Anyway, be warned that fishing by boat in Fiji is not cheap! We learned that if you want to catch the big stuff (like wahoo etc) then you need to be out for a full day so that you can get out far enough to catch the big ones! We spent most of the time fishing reefy areas with bait. We tried trolling but had no hits.

Fiji Boat Fishing

Here is another fish my brother caught on the boat out from Vuda Point. This was a fun day. We saw a huge hump back whale on this day and it jumped fully out of the water. If only I had my camera ready!

Underwater Shots

Here are a couple of underwater shots that I took when we visited one of the "nice" islands for half a day. I did see a squid while snorkelling around this island but did not get a chance to photograph it. It looked similar to the squid we have back home in Australia.

Gee, I only just found this thread Glen, sorry it has sat for so long without a reply. Most of the fish you caught in Fiji leave our Australian fish for dead - so colourful! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

Especially good to see that you caught some nice fish on soft plastics as well!! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Hi Glen,

Thanks for the report and photos....

If you don't mind me asking, when fishing the reefs, what type of baits where you using....Also, did the boat you hire, provide you with rod and reels? If so, do you remember the set-ups they where using?...

Also interested in knowing, what type of lures or rigs where you trolling with?..

I may try some of these tactics next time I fish in the Philippines...

Thanks,

Ned

the boat only gave us handlines! bit of a joke really. the bait was cut up fish. sorry i can't remember the type of fish.

luckily we did take along a couple of fishing rods and lures so we could do some trawling. though the boat was probably moving too quick for a trawl. we didn't get any action and we didn't see any fish splashing around either.

we just had some metal lures and some soft plastics. didn't do any good.

If I went again, I would go to a more remote island since Viti Levu was not that great. And I would have picked a game fishing boat and gone out to the really deep water to do some big game fishing. Oh well, live and learn!
