Japanese Pro Tips - shortytheyakker - 13-04-2010
For those that were not in Perth for the Calamari classic,a Japanese fellow flew out again from Japan for the Classic and gave us a few of his tips,,,because i fish out of a kayak 99% of my squidding is by trolling but for landbased or boats heres a couple of his tips from his talk.
Number 1 was when you cast out your line the jig must land on the bottom, this he said was very,very important.
Number 2 was give it two or three jerks (best to watch egi vids for this)but make sure you have tension on your line after this,,don't have slack line so it drops down again,then you can do it again after a short while, making sure the jig is coming in parellel as it goes along.
Paul Willis who imports squid jigs and organises the comp was saying he took some Japanese folks out in the boat,,they all casted into the wind while the Aussies casted with the wind behind,the Japanese out fished them.
Anyway i have not tried it but its worth noteing as these folks live and breath squidding for a living,,they are now in Exmouth fishing for squid only !!!
The Exmouth charter boat captain could not believe the request,LOL,,cheers,,

Apparently Paul asked them if they would prefer to throw stickbaits and poppers for GTs and they said "na can we just get squid" haha gold! They love their squid!

I agree with there tips 2 and 3 but when the yamashita boys came to melbourne the fish Port phillp bay they lost heaps of jigs by letting the jig sit on the bottom and get snagged, but spose it doesnt matter if you get them for free if it was me i,d be crying for a weekSo depending where your fishing i wouldnt just drop them on the bottom . <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='

Yeah not sure i would leave the jiig on the bottom either,,the Japanese fellow was from the Breaden company i believe,,its his 2 nd trip to the comp.

Different things for different places is true. In our part of Japan we do let the jig hit the bottom, and often leave it for 20 or 30 seconds (in spring) but we let the egi drop straight down after a few jerks.
In Autumn we might use the tension fall and brief stay on the bottom but keeping it on or near the bottom gets the big ones.

egi zed do you fidn the squid more agressive in autumn?
i let me jig hti the bottom where i fish and do let it is, then do the jerk, i find when the jig is sinking the squid approach and then the jerk gets them attacking it.

The Japanese have been out on the boat with Paul before ,they wernt in the Comp itself,,,i believe they went out on the day but got a lot of smaller ones,,

Definately. The little ones know no fear. They will often take a jig bigger than they are.

very true, alot of peopel down here stick to using smaller jigs, 2 and 2.5 but very true about them attacking large jigs.
so has your water temp started to drop? do you find when this happens the larger squid come back to the shallow reefs?

' /> water temps are rising.but yeah, as it gets warmer we can get them from shore again. This year seems slow though.
There is a place 2 and half hours south of here where we go. By boat we can get them almost all year, exluding summer. But in autumn its rare to get them over 1kg. I've heard of 3 to 4kg in spring but the best I've done is 2kg. From the shore the season is more restricted, only about 2 to 3 months in spring and autumn.
Close to where I live, the shore season is really short, about 1 month and off shore in spring is a couple of months. I haven't heard much of people off shore in autumn. Sizes tend to be a little smaller than further south.
