Newport Ri 2014 Squid Season - Squiderbruce - 08-05-2014 Quote:Someone needs a rod with 30lb test and a weighted snagger and harvest their lures, and hats! with all the GD pressure on the causeway to fish and all the rest of the other side of the causeway that they could be fishing, they are just being pricks, and they need a lesson. Just saying....Yea. You got my point. There is so many good hearted people helping other fellow good fisherman but some bad apple took a advantage of this forum. Enough say! Was wondering if someone could help answer a few questions for me: 1. Squid are around from Spring through Fall. It becomes harder to catch them in huge quantities when all the blues, stripers, and fluke move in.  2. My experience is that a flashlight/spotlight is almost worthless. It lights up too small an area at too low of an intensity to attract any bait. There are many options outside of the halogen/generator deal. There are flourescent submersible lights which clip to a car battery. You can use a propane lantern. You can find an area that is lit with a streetlight. I can't comment on glow sticks. Most squid jigs have some glow component. The whole bodies glow on some of them while others just have a glowing ring.  3. GI is a great place to squid for one reason only. First, and most important, it is a great place to squid because people squid there. That means that there are lots of lights attracting lots of squid. You can go there with just a rod and a jig and a bucket and catch plenty of squid. I've been told that there are much better private docks in Newport which produce far more squid to those who have access to them but few people have access. The biggest downside to squidding GI is that it's nearly impossible to find free parking and the pay-parking is a couple blocks away which is a pain if you are carrying 50 lbs. of lighting equipment and, on the return, a 5-gallon bucket of squid. If you really know the area, you can find the free parking but it's far better to go with a group of people who can hold your gear while one person parks the car and walks back. As for other spots, the best spot is the spot that you have access to with the right conditions (a cove/harbor thats not too rocky with some weed). Newport Ri 2014 Squid Season - Gilligan - 09-05-2014  Sounds like they are coming in!! Edgartown harbormaster reports that the Vinyard fish markets are offering "Vinyard caught squid", but he hasn't seen any caught yet. I am off to there tomorrow to give it a try for a week, will post if they are there in any quantity. Gonna stop by Sam's and Lucky's to see if they have any of these Yamashita Naory Range Hunters that some say are the hot item, although I rarely use anything other than the old Martinetti wood bodied prawns with the red strings. Gotta have as many kinds of jigs as I can as I'm sure most folks do. I never use the Yozuris in 4" though. Good luck to all, I hope they are as crazy thick as two years ago!! If anybody knows for sure that Sam's and/or Lucky's still have the Range Hunters in 1.8D and I.8B please post so I don't have to go there if they don't. Thanks!! Newport Ri 2014 Squid Season - jeepsrs - 09-05-2014 Went last night. Got 12 from 8:30 - 11:00pm. Mixed in size from 8" - 16". Using pink yozuri. I agree its good compared to the last few seasons. Hopefully they stick around. How long do they usually stay? I hope at lease to the next moon. Newport Ri 2014 Squid Season - skwidbert - 09-05-2014 Out at GI now. Slow, real slow. Weatherman said partly cloudy. So wrong Newport Ri 2014 Squid Season - CoastalLifePhotography - 09-05-2014 Disregard my pm skwid. I just saw your post. I see you do squid from shore during the day. I'll have to give it a shot. Newport Ri 2014 Squid Season - TravisS - 09-05-2014 I was at the corner of the rock wall next to the bridge with my wife and 8 year old son last night. It was his first time squid fishing and he had a blast. I was not surprised to see the the 3 boats come right in by the bridge, it is ridiculous, I don't understand how people think...its like thye assume the squid just appear in that one magic spot and then disappear...u can't catch em anywhere else in the ocean...We managed 1/3 a bucket in a couple hours. Newport Ri 2014 Squid Season - AT Grimaldi - 09-05-2014 Gilligan - I was at Lucky's Bait yesderday and they stil has some of the Range hunters in those sizes and weights.  Get them while you can.   - ATG Newport Ri 2014 Squid Season - JANZ - 09-05-2014 Trying again to post pic Newport Ri 2014 Squid Season - SalemScott - 09-05-2014 Quote:Trying again to post picNice looking squid Janz, hopefully they make their way up this way soon. I stopped in Beverly yesterday, nobody there, no bites. Good luck out there. Newport Ri 2014 Squid Season - CalamaroItalia - 09-05-2014 @ Bill G -- Thanks for the info, Bill. Much appreciated! Newport Ri 2014 Squid Season - JANZ - 09-05-2014 Getting the hang of getting pic from i phone to pc to forum. I think this one might be bigger, without a doubt they were both my largest to date. Newport Ri 2014 Squid Season - JANZ - 09-05-2014 AT G I made that out of plastic scrapers. Aussies sell them made for huge squid so when I watched the video I downsized it and made it narrower. Best is to watch video, I will look for it and post a link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMwDwON0pTA Newport Ri 2014 Squid Season - algreenjr - 10-05-2014 Went out to JT last night from 830-1130 and caught 34 squid most between 16 to 18 inches.
