2018 Rhode Island Squid Report - Diana - 16-06-2018 Thank youï¼ Quote:Diana, it's a Frances Fleet squid charter. They typically go out 3-5 times per week for a few weeks, as long as squid are around in numbers. 2018 Rhode Island Squid Report - greg ct - 16-06-2018 Late to the game, just got my boat back together. I can't get out this weekend, but weds to friday nights next week look perfect.  Planning to leave from the wakefield side of point judith sometime before dark and return whenever.  I'll be solo unless someone wants to hop on. Just pluck me out of the water if I fall in.  Boat is a 35' downeast with full electronics and safety gear for canyon trips, but you will be close enough to swim to shore regardless (just kidding about the swimming part).  Same stomping grounds as the frances fleet. We will rub shoulders with them if they are out.  Don't really care if the squid are there personally, I just want to get out and try. 2018 Rhode Island Squid Report - alaskanaturally - 16-06-2018 Quote:Late to the game, just got my boat back together. I can't get out this weekend, but weds to friday nights next week look perfect.Wish we were closer. Would take you up on the offer. We're sure you'll get plenty of takers. Good luck. 2018 Rhode Island Squid Report - Hobodave45 - 16-06-2018 I would take you up to Greg, but I'm on call and in CT so can't venture that far. Good luck though, and let us know how you make out! Canyon trip... Hmmmm. I have some gear suited for that trip. Definately let me know if you ever go offshore and need a hand. 2018 Rhode Island Squid Report - greg ct - 16-06-2018 Quote:I would take you up to Greg, but I'm on call and in CT so can't venture that far. Definately let me know if you ever go offshore and need a hand. I'm almost always looking for crew. Send me your contact info. 2018 Rhode Island Squid Report - greg ct - 19-06-2018 This is pretty amusing. It's an underwater cam watching some squid jigs being trolled along the bottom. The music makes it.  https://www.facebook.com/HotFish.eg/videos/778389095692258/  I never suspected they would hit the front part of a jig only. Guess that's why you need to set the hook...... 2018 Rhode Island Squid Report - alaskanaturally - 19-06-2018 Quote:This is pretty amusing. It's an underwater cam watching some squid jigs being trolled along the bottom. The music makes it.I was just about to post that. It's really instructive. It shows that you have to hit fast and hard. Also, a smaller jig would have helped in this situation. 2018 Rhode Island Squid Report - greg ct - 19-06-2018 Quote:I was just about to post that. It's really instructive. Smaller the better in our opinion. However, occasionally only the large ones would work. Saw that one night this spring at GIB. They would not hit our small jigs while other were doing real well on the large Yo Zuris. Change over and we started to catch them. One has to be flexible. 2018 Rhode Island Squid Report - Gilligan - 19-06-2018 Quote:This is pretty amusing. It's an underwater cam watching some squid jigs being trolled along the bottom. The music makes it.  Squid only hitting the front of the jig is not really true. Sometimes they do, but I have watched thousands of them take my jig from the back. Tease the crap out of one, he/she gets stupid, comes up from behind, I see the tentacles reach out, as soon as they touch the jig just reel harder and another squid in the bucket. Other times I see my jig going sideways with the hooks already in him, strike and another one bites the dust. I often cast and retrieve (dock fishing) never letting the jig totally stop or sink more than three feet with slight slow downs in retrieve and they take it from behind trying to catch up to it. I probably cast and retrieve more than straight vertical jig, but again, I mostly fish docks or sometimes from shore, seldom bridges or boats. Of course if they are thick and straight down I just drop and jig vertically, even then I often watch them grab it from behind as it ascends, and sometimes hit it on the way down whence they will hit the front of the jig. 2018 Rhode Island Squid Report - George5039 - 21-06-2018 Has there been anything going on in Newport at all for squid action? I was there a few weeks ago and there were tons of schoolie stripers around scaring away the squid. 2018 Rhode Island Squid Report - greg ct - 23-06-2018 Will try off the beaches near nebraska shoals tonight (Point Judith).  Forecasts looked terrible yesterday, but the wx forecasts backed off a bit. Winds will be in the 10 knot range +/-, seas 2-4, but short period. Dew point well below predicted temps, so no fog at least. Rain should be hours away. It's a go. It may be bumpy, but not terrible.  Oh, and the frances fleet's report from last sunday didn't suck, so there is that.  And they are pitching tonight's trip with a claim that there "has been piles of bait on the grounds".  Hoping for fresh calamari in my future...... 2018 Rhode Island Squid Report - greg ct - 23-06-2018 Just got back. Squid are still off the beaches. Every drift produced from 40 feet down rto about 25.  Lots of doubles.  2 of us almost filled a large bucket in 4 hours. Not bad for late season.   We were pretty much the only boat out there. I guess the frances fleet didn't go.   So get out and fish. I'll see if I can turn some of those into fluke tomorrow...... 2018 Rhode Island Squid Report - Kpark - 25-06-2018 Sorry my report is a little late. I went to GIB on the 19th and got around 80 total between the 2 of us. Mixed sizes but much more small ones than in the past trips. Action was much better late morning, than it was at night. Go figure... They were way more aggressive in the morning as well. I was there when the schoolies were chasing the squid too. I think it was around the same time when you saw them. Still got some even with the stripers around. Didn't seem to matter much. Not sure what it's like now, but my guess is that they're still around. Just not as many and are smaller than in the past. 2018 Rhode Island Squid Report - Kpark - 25-06-2018 Hi all! New to squid fishing this year and I've already caught the bug since day one. Even though I had a late start this season and didn't know what I was really doing. It's been fun since I got to learn so much from other friendly fisherman at GIB. If your on this forum, thank you so very much!! My best trip this season was 93 so far. And I owe that all to you guys. Can't wait to go again!!! 2018 Rhode Island Squid Report - Tim85 - 29-06-2018 Hi, Are there still squid at GIB? I live about 3 hr away and would like to get INK!  Thanks- 2018 Rhode Island Squid Report - George5039 - 07-07-2018 Quote:Hi,Hi i heard the bite was hit or miss down at GIB. There were tons of schoolies down there ! 2018 Rhode Island Squid Report - ejburbank - 11-07-2018 A curiosity question for all. What are your favorite brand and style of jigs? 2018 Rhode Island Squid Report - Tim85 - 11-07-2018 Quote:Hi i heard the bite was hit or miss down at GIB.
