Squidding In New England States - Anthony0803 - 08-09-2013 Had a blast in Beverly the last couple of nights. It's nice to see the squid still hanging around. Just wondering if the squid from Beverly is safe to eat or do you guys just use it for bait? Thanks again to all the great people on this sight. Squidding In New England States - SalemScott - 09-09-2013 Made it down to the pier in Beverly last night. Pulled a quick 5 medium sized squid but the rain quickly drove me away. We'll see what tonight brings. ![]() Squidding In New England States - SquidFox - 09-09-2013 Just came back from Hyanis no squid plenty of fish. I bought $140 worth of squid from the company name Town Dock in Narragansett They charged me $3 per lbs. The texture is very tender no good for bait or to eat neither. I lost twice the amount of bait to the fish, these tender squid from Town Dock are just falling right of the hooks. I bought by the box frozen and it supposed to be local loligo squid. Peace Squidding In New England States - JANZ - 09-09-2013 Nice to see SS is a member so he can post, welcome. I've been eating the squid all summer from that area and haven't grown a second head yet, no warnings posted or anything so, wait a minute no they are no good give them to me, LOL. I think there are still a lot of squid its all the other factors, like all the jelly fish, very cloudy water, and predators growing big enough to eat the squid. There is a lot of food also, tons of small shrimp, minnows, snappers etc, that many of the squid I did see by the surface just ignored the jig. I will keep trying until I end up with nothing for the trip. Ate some last night using squidder bruces batter. I think it was him that posted the batter mix, Fis chic wonder batter http://drumrockproducts.com/Fis-ChicPage.htm they were very tasty, probably ate a lot more than I should have Squidding In New England States - JANZ - 09-09-2013 Nice to see SS is a member so he can post, welcome. Squidding In New England States - SalemScott - 10-09-2013 Hi Everybody, I made it down to the Beverly pier for a few hours tonight and was able to pull 16 squid. Only 2 or 3 other people showed up while I was there and they didn't seem to have the patience to stick around long enough to get many. I got 5 quickly after getting there followed by a lull and finished up strong, pulling the last 11 in the last 30-40 minutes. One of them was huge as can be seen in the pictures below. That is a 12 inch ruler for size comparison. These were all caught on a blue/silver 1.5 Yamshita. While everybody else seems to be trying the usual pinks and oranges I've been having luck with the small blue jigs. Below are the pics.  Squidding In New England States - SalemScott - 10-09-2013 Squidding In New England States - SquidFox - 10-09-2013 Good going Scott ! I have not caught a squid since May. Thanks Peace Squidding In New England States - JANZ - 11-09-2013 Thanks for the update SS, I have the time this week to go. Just need to figure out which night will be best. Nice squid. I usually measure just the size of the tube. Looks like yours made it over the 9" mark easily. Now there is something to shoot for, an over 10" tube. Nice pics, I always forget to take pictures. Squidding In New England States - SalemScott - 11-09-2013 Thanks for the kind words guys. Janz, I feel odd asking this but....what's the biggest tube you've seen? ![]() Squidding In New England States - JANZ - 11-09-2013 Had to be around 12" I've seen in person. Pictures of giant squid abound on the net. My personal best has been just barely 10" Anything over 8" for this species of squid I consider a large. After reading articles Gunslinger posted links to I learned these squid could possibly grow to 16" and they only live for a year, wonder if they migrate or do they spend their life cycle right here? When I put my light down you can see loads of tiny shrimp so there's plenty of food. When you think about the nights when there's a crowd and everyone is taking 30-100 squid and multiply that times the nights they are catching, crap how many squid are there? So if they stay here guess you can catch em just about anytime. I would think they would stay until the food source runs out or they can't tolerate cold water. Squidding In New England States - JANZ - 11-09-2013 Here we go again, do not believe this squid report from Canal Bait and Tackle. Fishing Report 9-9-13 Cape Cod Canal: I pretty much think everyone knows how great the Canal Fishing has been this past week. Savage Lures, Magic Swimmer, Tsunami Shads, Top water lures. You name it has been working. A lot of big bass have been caught. The morning tides have been the best. At night the Squid are in very heavy at the East End of the Canal. Some of these squid have 10" tubes. Squidding In New England States - GUnslinger - 11-09-2013 gonna hit the Beverly pier tomorrow morning at 3-330 am to get a coupl'a hours in before work...have had some good luck with the last couple of pre-dawn high tides there. blue is definitely the color to use in both Bever ly & Salem.. Squidding In New England States - GUnslinger - 11-09-2013 Arrived at 415... Took a quick dozen, then only two in the next hour and a half... Want to go again tomorrow morning, but looking at at least a 12hr day at work today.. Sure hope I can wake up tomorrow.... Squidding In New England States - JANZ - 12-09-2013 That sounds about right, take a few right away then slow. Need to get back out. Squidding In New England States - JANZ - 13-09-2013 Beverly Friday night, give it a shot and if slow I may go exploring. Try to find Glouchester state pier and maybe even go to New Hampshire. Hi tide 6pm and noon moon at 9pm. But partly cloudy so that may help. Hope to see the water a little clearer and not as many jelly and lots of aggressive squid. Squidding In New England States - JANZ - 15-09-2013 Went to Beverly last night, water was a bit clearer and the jelly fish were not as thick. Did a quick walk around and saw it was really slow so after talking to SS who got 1 small one and then Anthony had a few small ones, figuring these guys are just about masters and they are struggling, I probably wouldn't catch anything. So left and went to Glouchester and found one guy squidding and he had come from Beverly. He had no squid. Left there and went to seabrook NH and hit the 2 spots I know of there and no squid. the 3rd spot I always go to is the fishermans park/pier just to the right or to the north if you prefer of the co-op was now fenced in and gates closed. WTF did we lose another spot to fish? Well went for a nice ride and got skunked, if its not over with yet I guess I'll have to rethink my next plan. Guess the sea bass will be next on my list. Squidding In New England States - GUnslinger - 15-09-2013 Sorry to hear you guys had a tough nite... I probably woulda been there myself, but I ended up crashing on my couch before 9... I hit the docks three times before work this week: Wed morning took 14, Thur morning took 13, and Friday morning took 5, three of them not much bigger than my 1.5 Yamashita... I'll most likely be going tonite... Don't wanna give up yet... Squidding In New England States - GUnslinger - 15-09-2013 Btw, Wednesday's take were all females, fat ones full of eggs... Squidding In New England States - Anthony0803 - 15-09-2013 Going to canal tonight. |
