Fished from 10 AM to 2 Monday with only a few. There was 1 brief flurry and then it went back to dead. No one seemed to have more than a few.

I just got back from Monday night GI. Plenty of people were fishing. But it was very slow. I got only 2 for all night. Some skilled fisher men got half bucket at the most. And also, I got a herring on Squid jig.

Yikes these reports are disheartening to say the least. I'm hoping the squid cooperate so I don't have to bust out the secret weapon on them tonight

Travis, I would highly suggest going with a boat. While I haven't killed them, the two times I went the squid consistently were biting the whole time. Yes it was slow, but I think if you have time, and you can stay for a while you will be catching all night. Most of the boats were lined up along the highway bridge, where it is low and close to the water. Some of them were killing the squid. You may want to try there. I had better luck near the SLOW, NO WAKE barge in about 25' of water. I think being around all the other boats with the crazy lighting was drawing the squid away from my boat and towards theirs. I only had 1 submersible green light, which worked much better when I moved to a secluded spot. We hope to be back up there on Saturday. Some of the squid we got were very big. I noticed alot of playing with the jigs too, not super aggressive, some drop offs, etc. Honestly, I think the whole harbor is packed with squid right now. My fish finder was going nuts whenever a wave of squid would come under the boat. Good luck.

I've got to work in the am! I'd love to, can't get enough of that place. Hopefully you get some. Maybe we'll get back up there this weekend. The boat only uses 3-4 gallons of gas, it's the damn truck towing the boat that is the killer!

Newport, Ri - 2008 Squid Season - BradS - 07-05-2008

I'm going out this afternoon, as soon as I get packed up and get out of here. I'm taking my kayak, thinking that I can get out where the boats have been catching them.

I also plan to be fishing for fluke and striped bass. I figure that with the squid in, the fin fish are probably underneath gorging on them. If/when I get some squid I plan to put one of them on a circle hook and drift with it near the bottom while I continue to jig for squid. If the squid are fussy and don't want to bite maybe something else will.

I'll be in a yellow Hobie A.I. so if you see me a wave would be cool.

Brad
Ok, here is a pic as promised of the reflector I've made. I forgot who asked me if I had an extra. I have 4 extra ones. I'll be up friday night if all goes well. All I'm looking for is to recoop my cost of making. 15-20 bucks is all I'm askin. Let me know if interested an I'll bring along the extras I have made.

Pearldiver
Hi Pearldiver,

I would like to buy one of your reflectors if you still have any left. It sounds like a great idea. I should be at the bridge Thursday and Friday night. I'll keep an eye out for you. Thanks!

Went last night between 6 and 9pm under the Jamestown bridge next to the light house. Squids still hit strong; bucket and a quarter plus an 18" striper who seemed to be lost.

there's a lighthouse under the jamestown bridge? were you on a boat?

Sort of a light house on the left of the $2 toll bridge heading into Newport. It's like a station of some sort on a man made island. I often go there to catch door mat size flounder. I went last night to see if flounders are in and got side tracked when squids were hitting. I had left a a pole with sinker and a squid on as bait and got a striper by accident. Small one though, maybe she'll be legal in a few years. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />
