Puget Sound, Wa (2009 Season) - larrinator - 05-11-2009

I went to the Des Moines pier on Friday, Oct 30th. It was dead! The wind was up around 25 mph, and it was raining like heck. I stayed for a couple of hours (2330 - 0130) on the incoming tide, but finally bagged it and went home.

I'll try it again this weekend and let you know how it goes. I do hope this year is better than last year for the East side of Puget Sound.

Have gone to Edmonds a couple times. Some small ones being caught up around the surface. Other than that, not much going on.

Went down with my brother to the Edmonds pier last night around 6:00. About 10 other people were there when we arrived, and I don't think any squid had been caught. Around 8:00, a few more people showed up. Stayed until about 9:30, but no luck on our end. Did see a few nice size squid pulled in once the tide started coming in, but they were few and far between. By the time we left, maybe a dozen or so squid had been caught.

Anyone know when things typically pick up at Edmonds? Are there any piers further north that are good for squid?

In the past 20 years, Puget Sound Winter squiid season started in mid-late October with a bang, but the last 2-3 years have been a total bust. The reason is unknown. Over-fishing(not likely?), water temperature?, natural cycle?

At any rate, this year is not very promising either, as I caught only 6 mini-squid (4 inches) in 3 hours at Elliot Bay last week. Normally, you'd catch at least 10-20 jumbo squid (8-10 inches) if you jigged for 3 hours, but it's still too early to give up your hope. May be it's just late this year..... <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Puget Sound, Wa (2009 Season) - Cass - 21-11-2009

So I think some squid might finally be coming in! Hit Vashon a couple nights ago and got twenty-four 4-6 inchers in about an hour and a half. I finally went home because I knew it was going to be a bear cleaning all those little buggers but they were sure tasty! Let's hope their big brothers will follow them in soon

Puget Sound, Wa (2009 Season) - uglysailor - 22-11-2009

Went to edmonds last night around 9. Boy was it windy. The local korean guy had already packed up and went home. Nobody got any. I'll try again tonight or tomorrow.

Puget Sound, Wa (2009 Season) - larrinator - 22-11-2009

I've been down to Des Moines pier several times this month and I have caught nothing (nor have I seen anybody catch any squid).

I'm going to try over in Bremerton this next week, maybe they are over there. I hope this year is not a repeat of last year for squid. Geez!

Puget Sound, Wa (2009 Season) - swese44 - 29-11-2009

I've hit the Edmonds pier about 10 times in the last month, for a grand total of....6 squid. The experienced regulars will usually pull up more than the rest of us, but it has been extremely slow. There have been several nights where nobody has pulled up a single squid. On top of that, all of the squid are very small, 4 to 8 inches long.

I'm heading out to Bremerton tonight for the first time, I'll let you know how it goes.

Puget Sound, Wa (2009 Season) - swese44 - 30-11-2009

Well there were no squid at the Bremerton ferry docks last night. I also drove over to the Community Dock at Illahee, same story. It was low tide so that may have played a part, but my buddy and I were the only ones squidding and we got nothing.

The local flounder fishermen said that 2 nights before there had been people squidding, but nobody had caught any then either. We switched over to bottom fishing for flounder and I had something insanely huge on the line for about 45 minutes until the line snapped (I wrote about it here), but no squid.

Puget Sound, Wa (2009 Season) - larrinator - 02-12-2009

At least this year there are squid - small squid, but squid nonetheless. Last year I didn't hook a single squid all season long (fishing Des Moines).

This year I'm going to try over in the Bremerton area (a long haul from Auburn), or up north (Pier 86, Edmonds, etc).

Does anybody have any info on the downtown seattle pier (the one next to the aquarium)? Is it open all night? Is there parking? I've never been - obviously!

Thanks!

I stopped by there one night about a month ago. There were some people there catching some small squid at around 9pm, I didn't notice any signs about closing early but I wasn't looking. I know that Bremerton closes at 10pm, if you're gonna drive all the way there then make sure you get there early enough and time it so you hit a high tide.

I went to Pier 62 in Seattle last night for a few hours, it was VERY SLOW. I got about 20 3-4" squid.

I had reports that Pier 69 has been good all last week. Seacrest Pier by Alki also has also been good the last few days.

Puget Sound, Wa (2009 Season) - The Bee Keeper - 08-12-2009
There are many places to squid fish in Kitsap County. Bremerton Ferry terminal is under a transition due to the construction of the new marina. We are hoping public acces is not restricted. That was a great place to squdi fish year round, 24 hours a day! Port Orchard has a few places. Brownsville has a large area. Kingston is also good. If people are catching only a few squid, I would bet many many more are around. For what ever reason (wrong jig color/type, depth, etc.), you are not catching them. They tend to school so a few usually means many squid! Make sure you change depth and method of jigging. You may also want to change the color of the squid jig and the number of squid jigs on your line. People who squid fish around here tend to be tight lipped. No reports may mean good squid fishing.

When we get good amounts of rain/runoff, stay away from creek/river inflows. This murks up the water. Our squid really like clear water. We have been receiving increased orders the last two months which tells me people are using the squid jigs! Just get out there and keep trying!

I am now off to clean some mussels and clams the wife and I got today. Man was it windy! Below freezing wind chills. Oved around to a few different locations in the North Hood Canal. A good 15 pounds of mussels/clams. Also shucked a few oysters! Yum Yum yum! Tomorrow going to fly fish for some searun cutthroat!

Happy New year!
Any suggestion for Whidbey Island?

Puget Sound, Wa (2009 Season) - glen - 08-12-2009

Quote:Squid jigging perked up on several piers in Puget Sound.

"Squid jigging will be pretty good with more activity at places like Des Moines, Pier 86 [on Seattle waterfront] and the Seacrest Boathouse [in West Seattle]," said Jerry Beppu, owner of Linc's Tackle Shop in Seattle.

Puget Sound, Wa (2009 Season) - The Bee Keeper - 11-12-2009

Does anyone know a squiding location on whidbey island? Ive squided off the Clinton fishing pier and saw 2 to 3 inch squid but had no luck. Anyone squid langley, oak harbor or coronet bay?

Puget Sound, Wa (2009 Season) - Half-Fast - 12-12-2009

Hit pier 86 last night from 9pm to midnight. Got 7 between the 2 of us, only one decent one about 8" the rest 3"-4". About the same rate for the 5 other people that came and went. However, this was the first time I have ever seen sight fishing for squid. My lady got 4 with the jig just a foot or two under the surface, not moving it at all, waiting for the circling squid to make a hit then pulling it out of the water. ive seen jigging in the light near the surface but not like this. I cant if it gets good to try this.
