Jigging At Night? - Acslata - 22-02-2010
Lighted areas attract squid, but it also attracts squid fishermen
So true. Jigging At Night? - ru 12 mug - 24-02-2010 up here in brisbane we fish day or night but if your fishing an area with no lights you fish with plenty of moon and the squid are there only a couple of feet from the rocks. on nights with no moon we just walk around the harbour working the street lights and it pays off. but in the daytime it can be on for young and old and be able to see many squid but it's a real art to catching them in daylight as they are as cunning as shythouse rats so knowing your stuff pays off...hell yeah. day or night I'm not fussy. mug ps...welcome to the old buggers club blue Jigging At Night? - Mudskipper - 15-06-2010
Many people think squid are more active during the night. As you would expect, they're not high on the food chain so venturing out under the cover of darkness would help when looking for food. Squid also have exceptional eye sight which helps them detect prey and predators. Many jigs have luminescent strips or are made from a material that is such. The amount that is luminescent varies from jig to jig, it could be a tiny strip or the whole body. This means they can be charged by being shone with light (from a torch, navigation light etc) so they stand out. Squid love light, and are attracted to it. Therefore they're attracted to the jigs. Basically, squid are definitely active at night. Maybe even more active than during the day (I think it's about the same).
I'm a total newb to squidding but have fished as a passion for 40 years. I have been fishing Redland Bay (Bris) across the past couple of weeks; and the standout jig for capture rate for me has been the GLOW series. I run two rods and a 40 LED light system forced into a white bucket. Whilst I'm fishing one rod, the other is in the bucket and light loading up with glow charge. I'm not saying this is perfect and the way to go as I am on a steep learning curve, but to date it has yeilded 6-8 biig squid per night that I have been out freezing my extremities off. A couple of 30cm plus bream and a coupla reasonable muddies have been good by products of the nights Pete Jigging At Night? - glen - 15-06-2010 Hahah you think Brisbane is cold! You guys have been snaring nice numbers around Brisbane and Moreton Bay recently; but more importantly they are heavyweights. I still rekken that after midnight high tide at Manly means that the also rans would be home in bed. As such, thats the time for the enthusiasts to have a shot with no wind and scerenety as part of the excercise! Pete |
