Newport Ri 2015 Squid Season - OneEyedSquid - 16-05-2015

Squid comes and go.  They are always on the move, but they always come back.  Anyone have a method to keep them around?

I do better with the shy squid than the show off squid that always dart around right in front of me.  Makes me want to use a net or dynamite.

Do scents such as bunker oil sprayed on the jig attract squid or repel squid

There is no such a thing like that.

If squids are around other fishs are there (ex. Blue, striper etc) chasing squid away but once in blue moon squid doing feeding franzy.

Quote:Went to Hyanis yesterday on a $500 six pack charter on the boat Bad Influence with Captain Jeff. Comes out to $85 per person.Had 15 cat litter buckets of mostly large to extra large tubes in 8 hours. On the way back we drifted for 30 minutes and had well over 100 jumbo porgies when our arms started to falloff and we cried "Uncle"! Snaildarter

Which one is you! i hope not the one that was watching me all day. Wink

Capt Jeff hammered them again today. I filled another 600lb fish box tonight. Left early as I watched capt jeffs crew pull double headers.

Not a lot of action in Jamestown but we did catch some.

That's Capt Willie Hatch there with Machaca. Very good captain out of Falmouth.

I was sitting on the back hatch of the port side of your thumbnail picture. I did learn a few things from watching you! Ha Ha

Somewhere on this site is a thread about squid jigging secrets.  A few of the guys swear by olive oil and garlic sprayed on jigs (especially cloth ones) prior to dropping.  A few like the prepared products you can buy in tackle shops.

While I never tried it for fishing, I really like olive oil and garlic sprayed on them after they hit the pan.  Wink

Went to a private dock last night in Middletown thanks to a friend and we killed them.¾ of a bucket in a hour ½ on pink yozuri for myself and a half bucket for him.im hoping we go again tonight.as soon as we got the double light stand lit we were nailing them until the the tide slackened and they shut off.they were in thick and feeding finally.went the night before in Bristol and got 5 in 2 hours.also alot of pogies heard breaking water.the season is finally heating up.

Quote:Was thinking about towing the boat down on Friday for my first squiding trip ever. What passage is best east or west? Was thinking about going near the Jamestown bridge..any advice??
Yeah, I have some great advise...dial your chart plotter way in and watch the ledges.  In a prospecting trip a few years ago I trashed a lower unit on 250 Yamaha and still it smarts just thinking about it.  There are some mean ledges down there.  Be careful, but go.  If you see a 24' Romarine Jenny Lee, that is me.  Come say hi.

Not looking for your dock in middletown , but what area? Anybody catching them in Newport ? should be if they are in middletown

Newport Ri 2015 Squid Season - Squiderbruce - 18-05-2015

It's no moon. Not goodSad(

Newport Ri 2015 Squid Season - squidman13 - 18-05-2015

The river side.went in Bristol tonight and I killed them.im out of room in the chest freezer.the squid are now in the harbor in big numbers.just abide by the signs on the town docks and take your trash and nobody will bother u as far as getting kicked out.everyone is very resourceful and friendly for the most part down here and dont mind sharing information.Bristol is definitely hot and probably will be for a while after the new moon.good luck everyone and remember to be respectful and take your trash.the squid are finally here

Newport Ri 2015 Squid Season - squidwhisperer - 19-05-2015

I thought the new moon was the best time? went sat night in Newport and only had 3 come over the rail and into the pail all on a green yo-zuri. saw plenty of schools pass right through our light but they must have all been female because they couldn't make a decision about whether to eat or not

Newport Ri 2015 Squid Season - JANZ - 19-05-2015

No moon I thought was best as the squid are more likely to see your lights from further away.

I never had any good luck on no moon before but I could be wrong Smile

Newport Ri 2015 Squid Season - CalamaroItalia - 19-05-2015

I thought that with their great eyesight, squid use the moon's light to their advantage when hunting anywhere (not necessarily near docks providing artificial light). But with no/new moon conditions, they tend to move toward areas where artificial light is present ... makes their hunting a little easier ... and ours too! Smile
