Newport Ri 2014 Squid Season - Snaildarter - 21-05-2014 Went last night off the beaches in Pt. Judith in my boat. Was much slower than last Wed. three of us managed to eek out 3/4 of a bucket. There was lots of them on the fishfinder but they didn't seem to want to bite. The report from the Francis boat was not great either. Newport Ri 2014 Squid Season - Squiderbruce - 22-05-2014 Got almost full bucket of them at the GI last night. Just need to put in more time Newport Ri 2014 Squid Season - CephBirk - 22-05-2014 I was at GI last night with two colleagues and caught three squid between the three of us.  By the way, my name is Matt.  I'm a scientist over at URI.  We're studying squids and are trying to catch some and keep them alive for experiments.  If you ever see us (we always have a big white cooler full of seawater with us) we happily take squid donations! ![]() Newport Ri 2014 Squid Season - BillG - 22-05-2014 Quote:I was at GI last night with two colleagues and caught three squid between the three of us.  By the way, my name is Matt.  I'm a scientist over at URI.  We're studying squids and are trying to catch some and keep them alive for experiments.  If you ever see us (we always have a big white cooler full of seawater with us) we happily take squid donations! I would suggest a trip on Frances Fleet. You should be able to manage a lot more than 3. From shore, you wait and hope they come by. On a boat, you go where they are. I would also add some aeration to your cooler. More than a couple and you will deplete your oxygen and fill the cooler with ink. Ideally, you would bring a pump and continuously add new seawater. Newport Ri 2014 Squid Season - Anthony0803 - 22-05-2014 I have kept a few alive and had them in a saltwater tank. Lived for about a year. As long as the squid are from the same school they will not attack or ink each other. When I tried to introduce a new squid a few months later, forget it. Newport Ri 2014 Squid Season - Retired squid - 22-05-2014 I was at Woods Hole this afternoon and got 29 squid. I was there between 2:30 and 5:30. Starting to see some small ones mixed in with the medium and large squid. A couple of years ago all I got at Woods Hole were small ones. Newport Ri 2014 Squid Season - algreenjr - 23-05-2014 Was at JT last night caught 31 squid mostly large. Real slow until just before high tide. Would have caught more, but small stripers chased them out Newport Ri 2014 Squid Season - JANZ - 23-05-2014 Last nights trip with Frances was great. Don't think we even made it to Nebraska shoals. We drifted all night with only 1 move. Started in daylight and it was a slow but steady pick. As it got later it got better and better. By 10:30 it was an all out blitz, on bottom, mid depth and even on surface. I employed Anthony's method and caught a bucket just on that, one jig no weight and even if you couldn't see them they came up and hit it. Lots of times had 4-6 squid fighting over same jig. This lasted till 12 midnight and then started to slow but we headed in at 12:30. Took home almost full bucket and gave away another full bucket. Yee Ha.  It was great being able to experiment. As for colors, pink, green, white, blue, orange tried them all with great success. Did notice how the squid would come up sometimes and race to the jig only to stop short and look at it and reach out to test it and after touching the jig (wrong end of course) they would leave and another would come and do the same. Got some of the spray scent (menhaden) and used that to see if it made a diff. yes it did they started taking it after touching it. Only 25 people on board and everyone was moving around. I caught squid on stern on bow and both sides of boat. BTW size did not matter, 1.5, and mostly 2.5 were working equally as well. Gotta go clean em now, should be done in about 4-5 hours (hate this part). Newport Ri 2014 Squid Season - greg ct - 23-05-2014 Janz, that is what I've been waiting to hear. I'm planning on going out tonight as long as no t-storms are around. The rain will have clouded the water up a little but hopefully it doesn't shut the bite down.  I almost made it out last night but family committs snagged me.  Were they using the big lights or did they stay dark? Newport Ri 2014 Squid Season - jeepsrs - 23-05-2014 Great report Janz. Thanks  Where is the spot in JT? Ive never fished there and have no idea where to go. I know theres Bevertail but I can see squiding on those rocks with a generator & lights. Any help would be appreciated. Newport Ri 2014 Squid Season - ejburbank - 23-05-2014 Quote:Great report Janz. Here's a link to the location on Google maps : https://goo.gl/maps/TWJqS Newport Ri 2014 Squid Season - JANZ - 23-05-2014 Boat was lit up. Timing on the blitz was just after low tide. Newport Ri 2014 Squid Season - greg ct - 23-05-2014 Finally got out tonight with dark night and his lovely wife. The fishing was nothing short of great. Dk's wife was high hook with an overfill bucket. I had almost a full bucket and dl had a full cooler. We were off matiunik point in about 35 feet. Nothing exotic for rigs. Just a high low rig with small sinker. Still giddy. Trying to figure put next trip already. |
