Newport, Ri - 2007 Squid Season - ecc998 - 14-05-2007

Did anyone catch anything today? I was there Thursday & Friday night and it was dead caught like 10 squid each night. You guys think the season is over? It’s hard for me to go to GI I live 30 min north of Boston. Takes me like 1:50 to get to the bridge. I am planning on trying this Friday night see what happens

I would like to hear somemore good reports. We are thinking about going tonight. High tide at 6:30. We had our best luck at high tide.

Newport, Ri - 2007 Squid Season - garbageband - 15-05-2007

Hello all. I'm new to this board.

I was at the GI bridge this morning. And I saw a men catching 20 - 30 while everybody else caucht 1 or 2. It was non-stop. He probablly caught a bucket and half all by himselves. I did not see any jigs on his rig, and instead, saw a little thing 3.5-4' above a sinker which I could not tell what it was.

I asked him what he was using. But we weren't able to communicate with each other well. All I picked up was that when he said, "Two Hooks". The way he fishes is not jigging but snagging, I thought.

Does anybody snag squid with hooks, instead of using squid jigs? Is there any online documents that tells you how to rig this? Thanks in advance.

Newbies No More!

Hi All,

The squid are definately still here, my son & I went to GI Saturday eve, fished 7 - 11pm and caught about thirty! Not none stop but well worth the drive, especially since we'd never squid fished before. Except for the kid, who out fished me 10 to 1!

My son and I went out on the Navy Base Saturday night into Sunday caught 128 lbs or about 350 squid. Sunday was a short day because of certain groups of uncivilized squid fishermen. I am bringing my German Shepard next time to sit between My son and myself so no one takes our spots or tries to squeeze in.

To answer the question we sell them and got 1.85 a lb. We also caught a dozen jigs so it was even better.

where is navy base.

Newport, Ri - 2007 Squid Season - harryfaoki - 15-05-2007

There are people who snag them with 5, 6 big hooks. Even if squids are there and aren't interesting in what we offer, those guys still do way better. But the way they do isn't fishing, it's catching.

Newport, Ri - 2007 Squid Season - williekane - 15-05-2007

In our case we used just two jigs on each line. I did have long line jigs with over 14 jigs on them but they really do not work from shore that well. As for if it is fishing or not I hardly call the mass caos on the GI bridge as enjoyable fishing.

The navy base is across from GI past the bridge. Anyone can go on the base just go to the gate and ask for a pass. I am retired military but it does not matter for access. Once on most go to the AirCraft carriers. I am not concerned about telling about this spot its not a secret. It can fish about 50 people but some groups put a 100 climbing on each others backs. One reason I will have my german shepard with me to hold my spot.

what is fishing is an open question. Does putting flood lights out is that cheating I dont think so.

Simply buy 5 or 6 medium sized treble hooks and attach them about 6~8 inch's apart on a weighted line. Its best to use this when the bite isn't good and squid are visible schooling on the surface. It does take a little finese to catch this way....Just be carful not to cross anyone's line, or else you got a tangled mess on your hands.

Can you tell me what type(how much power) generator and lights you use and where they are sold? Also are they difficult to transport from car/truck to fishing area? Thanks.

Hi BradS, JOHNAT and I (SuzySquid) would love to go tonight, however we are tired and trying to catch up on our sleep. We have caught a total of 80 Squid and had lots of fun. We are going on the Francis Fleet this Saturday night and try our luck on a boat. Please post tommorow and let us know how you made out tonight. SQUID ON.

Newport, Ri - 2007 Squid Season - squidmon - 16-05-2007

I was there today from 4pm-8pm and only caught 4 squids. 1 squid an hour and lost 2 lures. I'll try again next full moon
