Newport Ri 2015 Squid Season - BillG - 08-05-2015

Quote:Thanks TJ, but I meant more specifically in terms of locations around Eastern CT where people frequently go to catch them. I'm coming all the way from Stamford and the fuel gets costly making the hike to JT or GI each time (the trip is also very tiring, especially coming back at 3 or 4am). So if there was a closer hot squidding spot (somewhere in CT), I'd seriously consider it. Thanks.

Stonington, CT and Greenport, NY used to have sticky forum threads. I would guess you could probably find squid right where you are. You want to find some weedy bottom with a pier or dock with lights or provide some light of your own. Even though everyone goes there, I have it on good authority that the GI Causeway isn't actually the best spot for squid. Worst case scenario, you spend 2-3 hours squidding. Best case scenario, you find a honey hole.

Thanks Bill! The only problem I have with squidding in Norwalk is that, while it actually has a really nice fishing pier, I've fished here my whole life and never caught or saw a squid. It's also Long Island Sound, and given the dirty/murky waters here I have doubts about squid even swimming through. For now, I will try JT or GI, but may scour the Stonington area later in the season. Thanks again.

I never seen that name before but it looks like yamashita copy. Make sure it's not made in China! Lol

At goat island 1-3am. Lots of bait fish around. With setup at the second light on the bridge. Didn't catch anything. Another group setup in front of the parking area and they seem to be catching. Saw one bucket with a dozen. Did not look inside the buckets of their other buddies. They did not seem welcoming to share their ligt so we left. But definitely his weekend will be hot.

Really any place you can catch blackfish or tog from shore will be a candidate for squid.  Niantic and mystic come to mind.  The problem with ct spots is they tend to be very miss heavy on the hit and miss scale.  The squid just don't seem to mass up.  Probably too many predators.

Even greenport, which was once reliable, has become largely sporadic.

It's killing me my boat isn't in yet.  I might just be off hyannis for a few days.  First year since I've been in RI that my schedule and the weather coincide with the run.  Ughhhhh.

Newport Ri 2015 Squid Season - Snktido - 09-05-2015

@greg so are you saying that there are too many people who likes to eat calamari in CT?

Newport Ri 2015 Squid Season - greg ct - 09-05-2015

I could say a lot about predators from ct, but calamari loving people wouldn't top the list.  Wink

Checked the causeway out last night, fished the top half of the tide with my submersible light.

Millions upon millions of baby sandeels around, only saw one school of squid but they didn't want to eat. Didn't hear of anyone catching.

The squid school came right up to the light, could have grabbed them with my hands, medium sizers.

I'll give it another shot this weekend.

I just spoke to a guy who  works at Tomo Tackle in MA where i got my squid jig covers. He went to Hyannis this week and did very well during the day. He thought the squid would hit RI + CT this weekend or early next week.

Hyannis report.  Newport report coming soon.  I went to Hyannis and it was a good night fishing. Good weather. No wave and the bite was really good.

Newport should be wide open soon.  Here's some photo.

1tym, thanks for that. Great article. Will bring my boat to Pt. Judith from CT on Monday and scout around. Hopefully will find them and let you know.

finale caught some squid "snag" about 45 squid at newport.  hopefully they start biting today.  Good news about the bait fish a lot of sand eels.  now all we need at newport is for the squid to bite or swim my way and get snag lols.

Newport Ri 2015 Squid Season - BillG - 09-05-2015

Ink up!... Sort of. Went to the GI causeway around 9:15 tonight (Fri.). There were a bunch of people there, mostly on the wall instead of the bridge. After half an hour, no one had caught a squid. A guy leaving said goodnight as he passed. I asked if he got any and he said 1, but some guys on the top were catching nonstop. About a minute later, some guy came by telling everyone he saw that there was a huge pod of thousands of squid and the guys were catching nonstop. I moved up just on the edge of the pod which was more like 100 squid instead of thousands. I watched those 5 guys catch about a dozen squid in 10 minutes. A bunch more people showed up and jumped in even closer to these guys. None of us caught anything, however, those guys seemed to be doing pretty well. In any case, it's certainly a promising sign.
