Instead of celebrating the new year I thought I'd spend a few hours down at Des Moines. A nice school of jumbos came in around 11:00P and stuck around till just after midnight. There was only five of us cleaning up on this school, Two guys limited out. I put 7lbs in my bucket before the squid split. The tide was outgoing. Pink jigs and green jigs did the trick. I was using Squidcandy jigs and small jigs I picked up at Teds in Lynnwood. Doubles were common. One guy got a triple. It's amazing how good the fishing can be when there are no seals to screw things up. Just one diving bird who didn't really have much of an impact. Much better than the last time I was there last week - no squid. Happy New Year everyone.

@Red: Those mini-jigs are pretty good. I had one as a top jig when the run came in. It got fouled up and wasn't lined up right: it was sideways. I didn't want to change it out because the squid were hitting fast and I didn't know how long the bite would last. Squid were still hitting it but I couldn't hook them on it. Luckily my bottom jig, pink pencil jig, was doing good too and when the squid hit the top one the bottom jig was close enough to hook the ones which lingered too close to the top jig. I eventually fixed it and had pretty good results with it. I must say this though: I was doing good. But, two other guys were killing it. They were using pink and white pencil jigs. They had doubles more often than I did and they ended up catching their limits. They left before the run was over. The other two guys did OK. Technique is very important out there and I still need to work on it. The two guys who cleaned up certainly had it. They were catching even before the run came in.

@mekim, were they all jumbos? Did you guys have to run up and down the pier to chase them? I heading down there tonite to check it out! And what color work the best?

Tons of herring, a few squid around the table (nothing to brag about) and a ticket at des moines!

@Squidman: They were mostly jumbos. But, alas, tonight sucked badly. Was down at Des Moines from 10:30P till 2:00A. One small squid for me. I guess some guys were catching here and there. But, no school showed up while we were there. C'est la vie. With my luck, they showed up after we left. They always do. Heard the aquarium pier was bad too. Did the moonlight have an affect? Anyone? Anyone? There was also a seal stalking about so I was told. I couldn't see him.
We saw the cop putting tickets on cars when we left. You need a permit to park in the North Lot after 10PM.

@Mekim
Regarding the ticketing at Des Moines pier, any idea if the yellow parking passes we get with fishing licenses work for parking at the Des Moines north lot? i called fish/wildlife last year and they said yes but I hate to get into a he said/she said with the Poo Poo about parking there.
I plan on fishin there soon

Hey guys, I'm new to jigging so i appreciate the previous posts. what months are the squid season in the Northwest?
05-01-2012, 11:02 AM
@ken900, the season set by WDFW is year round but active time to fish for them is summer through the winter. Elliot bay jiggers had squid as early as late june through feburary even early March! Give me a shout if you want to meet up somewhere. I normally fish pier 69 from roughly 340 pm to 1 am give or take a bit.
