i've heard that there have been lots of mackeral and herring around. do you plan on trying to catch any? what would you use to catch these types of fish?

Sabiki or Mackeral rigs.
I hope that the squid will still be around in force during the middle of May, that's when I plan to come up and give my homemade jigs a run. They have always been very productive for me because they are nice and light.
Fwiw, the frances fleet started squid trips last night. That's early for them.

Their unbiased report:

Quote:The report from the first squid trip of the year last night was of slow fishing. A few handfuls of squid caught but not what had been hoped for mainly due to very tough weather conditions that were far worse than what was forecast. Tonight sounds much tamer and therefore we try again however there were plenty of squid marking on the sounder. So if you want to go tonight there is plenty of room so give a call and make a reservation. The Lady Frances will set sail at 7pm. The office will be open for check ins prior.

Spring weather is tough. If it ain't cold, rainy, or blowin hard it isn't April or most of May.
I brought home about a dozen squid on Thursday night from GI. My 12 yr old seasoned and floured them and I fried them up. Truthfully that were awesome. We eat fried calamari every week but the fresh stuff beats any other option out there. The taste was sweet nothing that I had at a restaurant or made at home prior.

How big were the mackerel?
I have not yet make it down to GI but fished Chatham on Sunday night. I was there for 3 hours from 9pm to midnight only got a handful. Others have the similar result as well. One gentleman also fished there on friday night said it was a different story that most go 1/2 of a bucket or more.
With the full moon this Saturday,I am wondering what everyone has planned. I am thinking of giving it my first shot of the season.
Fished for squid last night... right through to 4 a.m. Got a dozen or so, but definately had to earn it.. Very slow going in and around Newport. Water was very stirred up and fast moving... made for tough jigging. Many spots were just too windy. Also, it appears there were numerous small snapper blues disrupting the action... darting up from the depths into the bait cloud that had massed at the surface beneath my lamp.

This Sat is supposed to have "super moon" meaning that moon is closest to earth this year. It would undoubtly affect the tide and I wonder how it would affect the squid fishing? Any one here from past exprience during full moon?
When does squid season on gi end? will they still be around in June?

[/quote]The full moon usually helps bring them in the bay. Hope it improves over this week. Last week was better!
How far north of Newport has anyone caught squid? Do they get as far as Prudence or Providence?

Newport is getting to be a far drive .

Thanks

Last night es terribly slow. One squid over several hours. The squid fishing has really died down over the last week or so.
