my dad has been going a fair bit too, each time he comes home with around 7-10, probably averaging 8 per night by himself.

Im heading out there tonight with the family. let me know when you go next time teik, might catch ya there sometime !
i got 20 last night with 4 people. they started biting hard around 1am where hight tide was coming in. when i got there at 8pm, there wasn't much people, people started coming in around 10pm.

big tip from last night - we had 5 poles out, the guy beside me had 2, and he caught more than us.the one that he caught most was the one he was jigging, the other was a baited. its all got to do with jigging. squid likes the jigging motion then just leaving it there if they were to choose. but if they are just around then they will take watever. so its good to jig when their not on the bite, thats whats going to make you stand out from the 100 poles around you.

ps... caught a 1 kilo one, my pb.

merry christmas to all
nice work!! great way to spend the christmas holidays!
went to queens cliff yesterday got there at 5 30 and fished to 12 30 managed to 14 with my uncle mostly on the squid poles managed to get a double hookup on a squid pole which has a jig and a baited jig.
hey well done on the 14 !

was that before the shelter or after?

my dad was there on tuesday night, only managed 5
after the shed i came to late to get a spot before the shed but still got a good bag
its closing again in feb!!!!!!<img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Sad' />
What for now?
Fished queenscliff last Wednesday night, Thursday night and Saturday morning. By my accounts, the pier was pretty dead through most of last week. Fished for 5 hours on Wednesday and caught 1, caught 10 on Thursday night (5 hour session) fishing at low tide and at the start of the pier (go figure!), fished Saturday morning for 1 hour on sunrise (caught 1, dropped a couple of larger specimens)

Seal was around on Wednesday and Thursday night (picked my pocket once and took away a large squid estimated at about 1.5kg)

On Thursday night when I had the most success, dropped 1 large squid in the shallows and an even bigger one in about 12 inches of water whilst casting.

Most of the squid were caught casting and retrieving with a single rod whilst all the old timers with 10 poles caught stuff all.

Has anyone ever tried walking the beach at queenscliff at dusk and casting and retrieving squid jigs in the shallows? I say this because most of the success I had on the weekend was in very shallow water at low tide! Does anyone have any views on this?

All in all, the pier was dead last week - not very many bag limits reached. The pier was also packed to the rafters with fisherman everywhere. It is only a matter of time before violence breaks out. At this time of year, the meat gatherers are out in force. Be careful as good people are few and far between on the pier at this time of year. Good fishing to you all.

Hey Colossal squid,

I was there 5pm-3am Tuesday last week - and i have never ever seen so much people in queens cliff before than that day! everyone was rubbing shoulders, more and more people kept coming in and walking to the end of a pier then doing a U- turn back to the car. It was so full of people! I managed to get a spot at the very end of the pier. i managed to only get 8 that day with 3 people. it was a very slow night, even at the best spots under the lights. the squid wasn't biting hard, it was just one here and there.

The seal is always around, and i think its the same one every time! it eats up all the squids, i see it do a splash and all you see is squid ink all over the water. When you say shallows, do you mean at the very very start of the pier ? I'v never tried there, but i would definitely like to give it a go. do you just cast it and retrieve ? i gotta try this !

When the pier was closed, i had an idea of walking out onto the waters and casting out for squid- i was certain that the squids would be pretty hungry since there's no fishermen around the pier for months. never got around to it though. Im sure your walking idea will work, just takes time and work.

I agree about the violence at the pier. Iv seen some pretty nasty old mens out there. the ones that means business and are really selfish and offensive. gees i hate those guys so badly. I wish they catch nothing all the time.

Tonci - do you go squidding often ? Have you been recently ?

Theres a spot on queenscliff beach where you can fish off the rocks for squid. any one have any ideas? I have been told from another forum, still waiting for his reply for the spot. would be good wen the pier is packed !

cheers!
oh man are you serious ?

Im guessing this time will be to refurbish the first half of the pier. They should have done it the other way around. refurbish the first half, then do the second half and open the first half. Its also affecting business's around town.

time to find a new spot !
That's right - I fished right at the very start of the pier under the first light where the water is about 1 foot deep (it gets a bit deeper as the tide moves in). Most of the squid are caught casting the jig out with a rod and reel and retrieving slowly well within casting distance to the shore. Next time I will bring my waders and walk the beach in the hope of a few big squid.

If you fish on the rocks at queenscliff make sure you play it safe as these rocks are very dangerous with a very strong currents running. Basically, if you fall in you die as you will get sucked right out to the rip. I have fished there before and it is not safe. No squid is worth risking your life. Just like the old timers on the pier that are ready to stab you if you get too close to their meat gathering expedition.

Be safe
