Hi Guys,

Though I's start a new page to keep track of the Price of Calamari. Just so we can put a dollar value on our catches.

Don't get me wrong, I, like most of you fish calamari for the sport and the eating enjoyement. But cant get over the price they charge some times. But then again, when you invest all that money in gear/travel and stuff its good to know what your catch is worth,

On 15-03-03 (friday) I payed $19 a Kilo for Fresh whole calamari bought a the Vic Market.

I tell ya I appreciated every gram.....

Ciao.

JOe
Do you know how many fish shops sell baby arrow squid as calamari. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' />

And they charge top dollar for squid that should be selling for $3 to $5 per kg.

When I question them about their labelling, they tell ME that I don't know what I'm on about.

In Sydney it is really bad. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' />

And a local restaurant has tried to pass off squid as calamari. No thank you. I sent it back and got a refund. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' />

Wes
Just got back from Vic Market.

Wes,

Your right, there was only 1 stall selling "real Calamari" but the also had, get this, "calamari squid". To me the looked like baby aero squid. Does that mean they have cross bread calamari with squid?  (scuse the sarcasm)

So, in summary there is a shortage of real calamari, hence the price hike...

Price:

Squid: $2.50

calamari squid $12.50

real Calamari $22.50

Iterstate/international prices welcome..

FYI: I believe they way to differentiate between squid and calamari is the wings size.

Squid have a thin long mantle with the wings ending begining at top, ending one third of mantle length down,

Calamari have a fatter mantle, with the wings expanding top to bottom of mantle.

RGRDS,

Joe.
Any way to tell what type of squid if it is cut up into rings? <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' />

Cheers,

Glen
Glen, as far as I can tell, calamari rings are thinner and have a noticable thinning of flesh on the inside of the hood where the plastic "backbone" normally resides.

Squid rings that are uniform in shape and thickness are usually not calamari. And if they come in a box and are crumbed they have been reconstituted. YUK! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' />

Unless ..... I only catch the small impoverished ones and the obese lazy ones go to the markets......

Well, that's how I tell what calamari is before I eat it.

And, Joe, you are right. Even the Vic markets try to palm off blubber as calamari. I wonder if they ever eat it themselves? <_<

Thanks for the price update ...... I am keen to get out again as soon as this cold snap passes.

Regards

Wes
Reconstituted? <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' /> I had no idea they did this to squid. I will remember to steer clear of these.

I don't usually buy squid so its good to hear what to look out for,

Thanks very much

Price of squid in todays markets

puts a fair idea what our catches are worth WHEN we get them
Just heard;

Joe, good idea about having a squid "stock market".

You mentioned re-constituted squid. I have heard some of the calamari rings that you get in a packet (or fish n' chip shops) are made from a female pigs uterus. Has anyone else heard of this before? Is there any truth in this?
Hi SW,

Thats pretty disgusting. I just got back froom Vic market, and the deli was selling marinated calamari, I'm not sure what it really was but it was not calamari,

as Wes described earlier

" calamari rings are thinner and have a noticable thinning of flesh on the inside of the hood where the plastic "backbone" normally resides. " and I totally agree.

Market Price:

So Squid was $2.50/kg

Calamari 16 - 20 $/kg and priced accordinng to their freshness.

The $20/kg one still had its ink dots still moving. (that's the one i bought)

So those who can fish calamari go ahead, those who are unable to -> off to the markets!
<img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Cry' /> hi joe market (wholesale prices) flutuate a bit but the fishermen get about $9 on average from the wholesalers. Theres a hell of a lot of poaching going on out there when you think 10 squid might wiegh 15kg or more if you get the good ones, and you put the missus and the kids on board and get 30...............need i say more. the fisheries are looking to introduce fin clipping bit like the abbalone cutting so amatures have to land there fish cut in half, that way if they do end up in a shop the fisherieys will be able to ask questions.
gday blackhands,

welcome on the boards by the way <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

if rec. anglers are forced to cut their squid in half then i reckon the poachers will be turning their whole calamari into calamari rings and on selling <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Cry' />

AK
hi blackhands,

in the case of abalone, it has been proposed to remove the requirement to cut the meat since it causes spoilage of the meat and is a health concern.

(see the other post re: changes to the abalone regulations)

cheers, glen
Calamari sells here for around $9.99 a kilo - thats in tubes, or i think you can get whole squid for around $3-5 a kilo - which is mainly for bait, but ive heard its pretty flavourless to the fish..........
Hi everyone Big Grin

I have a question.. some one knows the wholesale prices for squid and calamari ? <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':woot:' />
