Hi everyone,

I just came across these interesting statistics taken from the National Recreational and Indigenoues Fishing Survey. This survey was done a couple of years ago but only just now the data is starting to be released.

This is only for the State of South Australia so far but I should get the other Aus states eventually:

Harvest - Calamari/Cuttlefish (Sepioteuthis/Sepia spp.)

Commercial Harvest in Sth Aust (2000/2001) = 507 tonnes

Recreational Harvest in Sth Aust (1999/2000) = 434 tonnes (46.1% of total harvest)

I have taken this info from http://www.sarfac.com/fishingsurveydata.htm

Sounds like a lot, almost 1000 tonnes a year taken out. Doing some quick maths though shows it's only about 1kg of squid if it's only cut up amongst a million people.

It would be interesting to know how big a hit this actually is to the total population.

Cheers,

Harvey
