only person trying for squid, got 3 in about ten mins, all about medium size, great eating. wind was from the north/north west. water was clear, waves about 1/2 a metre, about 30 mins before dark..
hey celtic,

welcome aboard and thanks for the fishing report!

i have never tried at mordialloc but sounds alright. is the pier lit up at night?

cheers,

glen
hello glen, just in reply to you asking if the pier is lit up at night, their are a few lights along the length of the pier, but it is still pretty dark if not under one of the lights.

cheers

celtic.
Howdy folks, I'm a new member, just wondering if anyone got a jig wet on the weekend. I got out in my rowboat (that's right, rowboat) off Edithvale (Port Phillip Bay, VIC), and managed 3 calamari + 2 arrow squid on Saturday, and 4 calamari on Sunday. I've noticed that the last month or so the arrow squid have reached plague proportions where I fish, and I generally catch more of them than calamari! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' />

I usually just drift fish for the squid, with my trusty pair of green Yamashita 2.0 jigs (this is the best jig I have ever used). Does anyone else do much boat fishing for squid in the Mordialloc-Frankston area? I usually find good numbers (4+ per trip) of squid, especially this time of year, but not so huge. Also, I used to fish Mordialloc Pier a lot for squid, the first light on the right hand side (near the mouth of the creek) was always most reliable........

Tight lines

Jazman
Jazman,

Since you've got a rowboat put a gas lantern out the front, arm yourself with a handheld spear and go out on a really calm night. Gives you a whole new squid fishing experince. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' />

I have gone out around Mornington with my night-spearfishing-rigged-up boat and have got a few squid/garfish. if i could aim better i would've done ALOT better <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' />

only problem is that during autumn/winter when you get the really calm nights its bloody cold brrrrrr....

AK
Thanks for the info AK

I have tried night spearing for gars, but never for squid. Do the squid actually come to the light, or does the light just let you see them? A gas lantern is a good idea, since it frees up the hands (I have been using a torch). Now is the time of year for real calm nights on the Bay, but yes, it is bloody cold. I went for a fish at Mordialloc Pier last night, and my hands are still numb! But it was still good for a few squid, and a runny nose.

Will let you know how I go with the spearing.

Cheers

Jazman
hi jazman,

The light does attract the squid, just like pier lights do, but because my dad is usually rowing and we are moving along at a slow walking pace i dont think they have much of a chance to "swarm" towards the light. Next time when we see some squid i may just stop moving and see what happens.

The garfish are attracted to the light however <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' /> you see fluorescent green gars darting around in the periphery of the light, awesome to see <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' /> Sometimes they pause for a while and that when you have to either spear them or scoop them up in a landing net.

Another report, not sure if anybody got out on the weekend, I spent most of Saturday night fishing Mornington/Flinders/Mordialloc Pier with a mate, for zero squid!

<img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

And my car broke down on the way home

<img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I think the water is a bit cloudy given the recent heavy rain we've had in Melbourne. And if anyone is interested, Mornington pier has been closed due to being 'structurally unsound', and you can only fish the first 1/4 or so. Which is annoying cause there are some good lights towards the end.

Wishing you all better luck than me

Jazman
I always found after a lot of rain i got zero squid too.

Mornington pier has been shut for a couple of months now.

Does it look like they have done any repairs yet?

Last time I was there there was some boards missing near the front of the jetty. Otherwise looked OK.

Cheers, Glen
Hi Glen, and thanks for a great site.

I think that because squid are sight predators the muddy water makes it hard for them to find the jig. Do you think that squid still hang around in the muddy water, or do they go out deeper to avoid the murk?

Sorry, I wish I'd paid more attention to the state of the pier (it was dark, and I was annoyed that it was closed) I remember some piles of planks stacked near the start of the pier, perhaps work is going to start soon. I hope it does, Mornington is one of my fave piers Big Grin

They are still there in dirty water you just have to put your jig on their nose.

Baited jigs work a bit better in the mud.

Hello all

I managed a few squid from Mordialloc, Middle Brighton and Altona piers over the weekend, from speaking to other people fishing the squid seem to be firing all over the place at the moment, One guy I spoke to said last weekend he and friends got 22 squid from Queenslciff Pier, one of which was almost 5kg, and stripped 100m of line from his reel in its first run.....scary.....

He caught this on a baited jig with a 30cm long salmon as bait!!

I think I will be heading to Queenscliff soon!

Best of luck

Jazman
Hi guys, the small-medium sized squid are going off around the Mordialloc area right now, I bagged out on Friday, Monday and Tuesday in quick time. I was fishing in a boat about 1/2 - 1km off shore. Yamashita 2.0 jigs in green and orange were doing the job, no hits on larger Yo Zuris or those $5 el cheapo jigs.

Used a small squid for a jewfish bait under the westgate bridge on Monday night, and got a huge run, no hookup though! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':au:' /> Trying again this week.

Good fishing

Photo of a squid fishing destination:

Mordialloc Pier, Port Philip Bay, VICTORIA

This is probably the most reliable squid pier I know of on the eastern side of the bay, it's a rare night when you go home squid-less, and when they're on it's crazy. Most of the squid are not huge, so size 2.0 jigs are the go, I've also had good success on size 1.8 yamashitas. A lot of garfish are also caught from this pier, as well as whiting, snapper and many other species during summer.

A lot of garfish are also caught from this pier, as well as whiting, snapper and many other species during summer. I have always had best success with squid on the first third of the pier (ie/ right near the creek mouth), and generally the RIGHT hand side of the pier is most productive.
Squid - 2, Fisho - 0

Went to Mordialloc pier about 9:00 PM Friday, 11th Feb, 05.

Tried fishing beside first light, near mouth of creek.

Water depth only about 2M, Baited jig, Silver whiting, head down. Suspended

below float approx 1/2M off bottom.

Quite a few hopefuls along the pier, mostly chasing pinky snapper.

Nobody was catching much, probably due to the dirty water. (courtesy of the recent heavy rains in Melbourne)

Weather was beautiful, temp about 18C, wind about 5 Knots.

I was trying out a new squid pole. 20 Feet long and rated at 4 - 10 Lbs line weight.

Hooked a small squid of about 300g at a guess.

I had lifted him clear of the water and was swinging him up from the water. The pole was just about vertical when............... Snap. The end of the pole snaps off and deposits squid, jig, line, float and broken rod tip back into the water alongside the pier. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' />

After some grumbling and assorted growling noises about lousy, inferior equipment, I went on with fishing with a light surf outfit and another baited jig.

On about my third retrieve I noticed something glowing attached to the barbs of the jig. It was the tip of the broken squid pole, still attached to the line, etc.

When the squid, etc hit the water, it must have dragged my baited jig back under the pier and around a mussel encrusted pile. I pulled on the line and I could feel the jig on the other end come up as far as one of the snags, and lower itself back down when I released the pressure. A second time I lifted the jig I felt some light tugs pulling it back down. So something was still having a chew on my silver whiting. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blueboxbullet.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' />

I stuffed around for about 10 minutes trying to free the line with no success. So I just snapped the line and at least salvaged my swivel and float stopper. I watched with dismay as my float began a journey towards Williamstown.

Close to midnight with no sign of any further action and another jig down due to a snag. I pulled up stumps and headed for the car. Good timing as the wind really picked up and was blowing at least 25-30 knots. Just got all the gear loaded back into the car and the rain started. Rain persisted for about the next 45 minutes on the way home.

The next day I took the faulty pole back to the shop where I bought it and they exchanged it without any argument. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> I didn't get the same brand the next time as I thought them a bit too flimsy. They had another brand that was rated at 6-12Kg. The new pole is a bit lighter and quite a bit stiffer too.

I would recommend the shop where I bought the pole as they have quite a big range of fishing gear of all persuasions. The staff are real fishos too and can make recommendations based on experience. One of the staff told me that for about 3 years he was a fishing bum and all he did was go fishing almost everyday.

What a life!! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

The shop is called "Anaconda - the adventure playground" and is located at the corner of Canterbury and Bayswater Rds in Bayswater. (Eastern Suburbs of Melb)

Not only do they have heaps of fishing gear, they have all sorts of outdoor gear. Tents, camping, skiing, watersports, mountain biking, climbing gear, 4WD equipment.

They even have their own indoor rock climbing setup where the kids can be harnessed up (Must be 6 Years old and over 20Kg) and they climb one of about six differing levels of difficulty climb. It only costs $2 per climb and the kids love it. (Besides that, Mum can watch the kids climbing while dad wanders up and down the aisles of fishing gear, drooling at the offerings.) <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wub.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':wub' />

Now I have a great excuse to go to the fishing gear shop, because the kids nag at mum to let them go climbing. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />
hi sea-dog. thanks for that report and the info about the shop in bayswater.

love your cuttlefish avatar by the way,

Apparently they're edible if you don't smell them first  <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/crying.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' />

I tried those cuttlefish snacks a while ago, yes they do smell abit fishy, but they're quite tasty with a cold one. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/beer_mug.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/beer_mug.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' />

I spent an hour throwing jigs off mordialloc pier last night, there is dredger working right in the mouth of the creek and I think the water is dirty for this reason. Anyway I didn't get a touch, despite about 5 changes of jig.

Cheers
