Dear Glen, everyone,

Redondo at Des Moines, Washington, USA, is a pretty good place. It can get a bit windy though so if you can deal with that, then this is the place to go! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

Just thought I'd say hi. I live near the Redondo Pier and I fish for squid there several times a week. I usually get about a pound an hour, some days less, some days more. I haven't been able to eat all mine, I've frozen some and given some away. Lately I've been making jigs too. This is my second year making the jigs and I'm finally getting pretty good at it. They are starting to work as well or better than the store-bought ones.

Unfortunately, I don't know the species either, but they are tasty.

I fished on Friday too. I was at the Redondo pier. I got 30 squid in about 2 hours. Homemade jigs for me too.

I also stopped by on Sunday, but it was too windy to fish.

I went to redondo tonight at about 930, left at 1145. Caught one average sized squid on my first time down, nothing after that. There were about 10 other squidders there, a total of maybe 10-15 squid were caught all night. Only one light, perhaps the reason for the absence of squid. The other squidders say it has been slow so far, maybe in a week or two they will show up in more numbers.
They should start coming in any time. I have been hearing better reports from Des Moines lately. Still a little slow, but I hear some people are getting limits.
Hello to all,

I tried some of my homemade jigs last night and caught about 2lbs at pier 69 downtown
can you post of a photo of your homemade jigs? well done!

cheers, glen <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' />

Hey fellow squidders ....... yes the season has finally arrived, I think ?!?! Went to Redondo this morning ..... 30 minute run between 4:50 am til 5:20. My two buddies and I got 15 lbs. in that time. It's been a slow beggining, but hopefully it will get better in the next week to two. Good luck everyone. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

For an online tide book try the NOAA website below. For Redondo, click on the Des Moines East Passage link. Enjoy! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' />

Juicy Jigs™ Squid Jigs has a web site www.juicyjigs.com. The site has a link for Washington tides. Just click on your area and the tides will come up.

Happy Squidding,

my brother and i went to redondo last night for the first time squidding. i had read just abouut everything i could find on squidding and it's techniques. we both caught one squid in four hours. the ones doing all the catching were the ones right under the lights. I was wondering would it be better to jig from a boat? Thats if we had our own light source. Also what lights work the best, flourescent, halogen, etc? another question, when and where are the best times for squidding in the olympia - tacoma areas? <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/us.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':au:' />
The best times for fishing at night tend to be an incoming tide through high tide. Redondo is exceptionally bad at low tide times due to low water. Piers that have power to plug in are nicer. Les Davis Pier in Tacoma, Pier 86 in Seattle are good locations. Dash point is also good, and they have been doing fairly well squid fishing during the day as well.

Technique and squid jig color/size make a big difference as well.

I personally use a Metal Halide light 400 watts, puts out a lot of light, in a good color range. I also have used High Pressure Sodium lights, and have done well with those as well. For a lower cost, halogen is a good alternative.

Feel free to contact me direct for any more information mail@squidjig.com

Hey .... you want to squid at Redondo Pier, it really does not matter if it's high tide or low tide this year!!! We've had several runs during low(minus)tide with big squid coming in. What does matter is lights and water movement. If you are under or near the lights you are in business, but if you are not, well you will struggle. They do seem to come in spurts when the water is either moving in or out. It has been a really slow and wierd year at Redondo. I go there for at leat 6 - 8 hours a night for 5 to 7 days a week. Stick to the GREEN or PINK jigs from JIM. He's really works!!!

Hi Inkmaster! Hey, thanks for your info on Redondo. It seems that you're right on the money when you were talking about being right under the lights, we were towards the outer reaches of the lighted area, and yep we struggled. All of those jigging right underneath got all the action. The squid seemed to range from 6-12 inches. Are you aware of any places to squid down around Olympia? It sure would be nice not to have to drive so far, (it's about 80 miles for me to drive to redondo). Also, you mentioned "Jim", would he be from Juicy Jigs? I have looked at their website as well. I may have try some of their jigs, any particular style?
I believe there is at least one place in Olympia, but I don't know the name of it. Another location closer to you would be the Steilacoom Ferry dock, I have not heard too many reports from there, but I know that is a location.

Another location, just a bit closer for you is the Les Davis pier in Tacoma, and it also has power available on the dock so you can plug in your own lights.

Here are some jigs that we provide that have been doing quite well. In each color range, both the color (which is hand mixed) and the white sections are Luminous. Sizes range from small to large 1 3/4" - 3" from tip to end of hooks. Colors available are (Pink, Green, Orange, Blue), spiral stripes are also available by special order.

YES, I would LOVE to know a location to go squid fishing in the OLYPMIPA, WA area. I have moved here from near the Redondo area, and need a local area to go on nights when I only have a few hours to squid. ANYONE who might know ANYTHING, please give me some information, anything. Shout out to any of the Redondo squidders I stood next to on my Winter Break, hopefully you guys are yardin' um' in while im sitting here doing my reading at Evergreen. Good luck,

brady
I believe the location in Olympia is call the "Luhr's Beach Pier", and the next closes is probably Steilacoom called "Clyde Davidson Pier". I do not have directions on how to get to these piers however.

Hope this helps.

I tried to find the luhrs beach pier last year at night, and unless its aways from the access road, I saw no pier. To get to lurhs beach you nee to take exit 111, go over the freeway heading west and take the first right at the roundabout. I was only down there the one time so I don't recall the rest of the roads to get there. you can find it by looking on one of the "map" sites on the web. just punch in Luhrs Beach drive, and Lacey Wa. It's really too bad we don't have anything like what they have up north. If you go there I'd go first during the daytime just to make sure there is/or isn't a pier there.

Lots of luck!
