This is usually the time of year I call my good friend Mike (EatFish on this site) to get amped up for another salt water season. This year, the coming of spring is not as bright as it once was, knowing that my good buddy is no longer around...no more last minute calls to go chase phantom squid reports in the sound, or target stripers, or head out to do some tuna wishing. It's sad to see such a young guy so full of life and enthusiasm have it all end so quickly, and moreso knowing what he leaves behind.

It's funny knowing that our friendship all started here on this site, several years ago, about this time of year, all because of our tentacled quarry.

Rest in peace Michael Balboni, and tight lines...Your Pal, Trav

I've lost a few fishing friends and it is a bit tough making those drives alone after

fishing most of the night.  It was most comforting when you know your buddy has

your back and you each keep an eye out for each other.  It does make for less

frequent trips also not to mention increased cost of the trip.  After 5 yrs of fishing

without a buddy I was fortunate to meet many other anglers who have been very

friendly, helpful and at least watch out of the corner of their eye.   It had been a

few years since I fished from shore, dock, pier, and I was a bit apprehensive to

trying these areas (stories of gangs and bad people).  Well so far I have met a lot

of very nice folks and will not hesitate to try new areas even in the dead of night.

Do not let the language barrier stop you from communicating with other anglers

as I found the universal language of angling.  Pointing, showing rigs and jigs and

such  will make us all one big family and I learn something new on just about every

trip.  Hoping to meet up with some of the regulars in RI and CT some night so I can

put a face with a user name etc.  Bao, Han, Mike, Scott, Anthony just a few folks I've

met that I have learned from.  My only wish is that I can leave others some of what I

have learned to make me a better angler.

So sorry for your loss! Poor guy :-( You guys should join our Facebook Page, Cape Cod Squid Squad. We have a great group of friends and dedicated fishermen and ladies. The season is almost upon us!!!
